Traffic violence is one of the leading causes of unintentional injury death in the United States, and people of color are overrepresented victims of traffic violence. However, Los Angeles’ Vision Zero program, which aims to eliminate traffic-related deaths in the city, does not currently consider racial factors to determine prioritized need and investments. In a new Lewis Center brief, the authors consider how recent directives to prioritize equity in city policies can open a door for actions to address racial disparities in transportation safety efforts.

Rental housing registries require landlords to register and report basic information about their units, assisting with building inspections and enforcement of tenant protections. Our latest Housing, Equity, and Community Series event will explore the possibility of California state lawmakers establishing a statewide registry. On Jan. 20 at 12 p.m. PST, join a panel discussion, including Assemblymember Buffy Wicks, author of the recent bills to expand registries statewide, to discuss the role of rental housing registries, obstacles to their adoption, and their potential to improve our understanding of the housing market and better protect California’s renter households.

Congratulations!
Lewis Center fellow Sam Speroni MURP '20, won the prestigious Neville A. Parker Award for best capstone project for his research on ride-hailing as school transportation for vulnerable student populations. He worked with the ride-hailing service HopSkipDrive to analyze whether new mobility options could offer comparable school transportation options to foster youth, homeless students, and students with disabilities.
