The first seminar will include Thomas Van Dam, Ph.D. - Resiliency of Pavement Infrastructure – Issues and Efforts; Qing Lu, Ph.D. - Pavement Overlay Strategy Selection for Reduced Cost and Environmental Impact; and Dhanushika Mapa, Ph.D. - A Field Study of the Effect of Early-age Cracking Mitigation Measures on Stress Development in High Early Strength (HES) Concrete.

Two NICR students receive national awards from the Council of University Transportation Centers (CUTC)

Nominated by the National Institute for Congestion Reduction (NICR), two graduate students received national student awards from the Council of University Transportation Centers (CUTC).

Zhiwei (Nicklaus) Chen received the Charley Wootan Memorial – Masters Award for his thesis “Exploring the Equity Performance of Bike-Sharing Systems with Disaggregated Data: A Story of Southern Tampa.” This thesis was mainly sponsored by CTECH and advised by Amy Stuart, Ph.D., Yu Zhang, Ph.D, and Xiaopeng “Shaw” Li, Ph.D. Chen recently passed his dissertation defense with related work.

Xiaowei (Tom) Shireceived the Neville A. Parker – Science & Technology Award for his paper “Trajectory Planning for an Autonomous Vehicle with Conflict Moving Objects over a Fixed Path.” This development has been used in Dr. Li’s current NICR project on transit priority and funded by the National Science Foundation.

The students received their awards on Wednesday, January 6, 2021. Congratulations to these outstanding students!

Free Public Webinar on the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority Connected Vehicle Pilot

The U.S. Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT) will host a webinar to share the deployment performance results from the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority (THEA) Connected Vehicle Pilot and the plan to migrate the current pilot to the Connected Vehicle Real-World Test Site (CVRTS). The webinar will be held on Monday, January 25, 2021, at 12:00 pm.

Florida Rural Transit Assistance Program (RTAP) has another successful year

Jodi Godfrey was announced as the first Secretary of the TRB Standing Committee on Transit Safety and Security (AP080). The Task Force was elevated to a Standing Committee. Godfrey has been a member since 2017.

Florida Rural Transit Assistance Program (RTAP) has another successful year

Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the RTAP community was able to make and grow connections using the listserv, social media, and website. RTAP transitioned all trainings and events online, and they were able to connect with 1,431 participants.

NCHRP 25-47 How to Measure and Communicate the Value of Access Management

This NCHRP project produced an Access Management Communication (AMC) Toolkit with tools and guidance for measuring and communicating the value of access management. The AMC Toolkit is a visual document that links to a suite of spreadsheet tools, infographics, and other resources to help you make the case for your access management project or policy. Updates on this project will soon be available.

CUTR’s Lisa Staes and Jodi Godfrey’s FTA report “FTA Standards Development Program: Crashworthiness/Crash Energy Management for Transit Bus (Report 0179)” was recently published and now available online.

This research includes an examination of the standards, guidelines, and recommendations associated with crashworthiness and Crash Energy Management (CEM) for transit buses, including articulated buses, BRT buses, and paratransit body-on-chassis buses. Included in this review are standards that exist in the U.S., including Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) and state standards and those developed and adopted by entities outside the U.S., including the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and Australia. This examination also includes standards issued by Standards Development Organizations (SDOs). Where data were available, it also presents recommendations from previous studies and reports that establish the efficacy of any established standards.

CUTR’s Lisa Staes and Jodi Godfrey’s FTA report “FTA Standards Development Program: Crashworthiness/Crash Energy Management Follow-up for Less than 30 Ft Bus (Report 0141)” was recently published and now available online.

FTA directed this comprehensive study that includes background research and analysis on needs and gaps for voluntary standards or recommended practices for crashworthiness and crash energy management (CEM) for less than 30-ft paratransit body-on-chassis buses (cutaways). It includes case study evaluations for four states—Florida, California, New York, and Pennsylvania—and a supplemental examination of NTSB investigation reports and recommendations associated with similar vehicles. Findings are presented related to voluntary standards, guidelines, or recommended practices related to crashworthiness, crash energy management, data needs, and future research.
