Making a Way in the Wilderness

Third Sunday after Epiphany

Live Zoom/Virtual Worship
10AM

As we continue through the time after Epiphany, stories of the call to discipleship show us the implications of our baptismal calling to show Christ to the world. Jesus begins proclaiming the good news and calling people to repentance right after John the Baptist is arrested for preaching in a similar way. Knowing that John was later executed, we see at the very outset the cost of discipleship. Still, the two sets of brothers leave everything they have known and worked for all their lives to follow Jesus and fish for people.

Baptism/Water/Font Pictures Wanted!

As we enter the new year, we invite you to set up a worship space that includes water. We will be including a Thanksgiving for Baptism in our services this season and would like you to be able to participate in a tangible way. Any kind of container will do: If there's anything we learned in 2020, it is that God will meet us where we are! We'd love to see your creativity. Send Heike a picture of your worship space including water or a baptism photo and we will include these in our upcoming worship videos. Deadline to submit photos is Thursday, Jan. 21. Thank you!
Please pick up your 2021 Offering Envelopes from the church office if you haven't done so already. It saves us postage and we would appreciate your help. Call the church office if you have any questions at 630-323-5530.

Affordable Housing is needed Worldwide – Even in DuPage County
Members of Redeemer were invited to see what affordable housing looks like in the Western Suburbs of Chicago. So, Mary Landis and Lanny Wilson trekked out to 1212 Larkin Street in Elgin, Illinois on cold, wet January 14, 2021 to view the project which was initiated in large part by the Fox River Valley Initiative in Kane County, an affiliate organization of our own DuPage United.

Building affordable and accessible housing for individuals, families, young adults, and people with disabilities is one of the goals of DuPage United, Redeemer’s organizational partner in local community ministry. Organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, which former President Jimmy Carter has helped to make known, have acknowledged that a safe, decent, affordable home is fundamental to a family forging a path out of poverty. In addition, families and individuals find better health, more financial freedom, independence, stability, and security when they have an affordable roof over their heads.

The square block of affordable housing that is called “1212 Larkin” in Elgin is an impressive undertaking that was only made possible through the collective action of groups like DuPage United. The forty-eight unit complex includes newly built living units and a large, historic building. These will provide safe, affordable housing for individuals, people with disabilities, and families up to six. Our DuPage United lead organizer, Amanda M Reilly-Sokoli, was joined by Rabbi Frederick (Ricky) Kamil from Congregation Etz Chaim in Lombard to provide tours and information. If affordable housing is an initiative you are interested in please contact either Lanny or Mary.
