What if...?
What if… we were all living in communities that were healthier, quieter, more sustainable, friendlier, safer and welcoming to people of all ages, colours and creeds?
January saw the publication of a special edition of the Camden New Journal with a four-page community-written 'Camden Future Journal' wraparound. It gives a glimpse of a bright tomorrow - but the content is based on things that are happening today.
Last Autumn, people who work, live and study in Camden were invited to visualise what our borough could be like in 2030 once we have addressed the climate and social inequality crisis. The competition received over 300 entries, of which 40 were published in a special edition of the Camden New Journal on 7 Jan 2021. School children expressed their visions using poems, stories charged with positivity and hope. You can view all entries here: www.visioningcamden2030.com
We are now looking at ways in which we can share this information to inspire others, including pop-ups, touring exhibition and possibly a book. Clean Air Sooner
Every day children across London are being exposed to pollution that causes damage to their lungs. A recent study by Kings College London, suggests that some of these children already have their lung capacity reduced by as much as 10%.
Clean Air Sooner has developed six free-of-charge cleaner air programmes designed to quickly improve the air quality in and around schools. These include raising awareness, active travel, anti-idling, pollution mapping, green infrastructures and re-imagining streets. The projects involve pupils, teachers and parents delivering pupil-led projects and adopting small changes that will make a big difference to local air quality.
Join us on Thursday 28 Jan @ 5pm at the next sustainability peer support group to find out more, a representative of Clean Air Sooner will be there to talk about their initative.

What does it mean for a school to declare a climate crisis
As a result of the pandemic, we have decided to push the launch of the School Climate Charter to late summer 2021. In preparation for this, we are looking for a small group of schools to explore what it means for Camden schools to declare a Climate Crisis.
We will be adapting the Think and Do approach to problem-solving, based on unleashing people’s imagination to find creative solutions to the climate crisis. The pilot will involve a short induction followed by a short period of implementation at school which will be adapted to the school’s needs and availability (including pandemic restrictions).
If your school is already running sustainability initiatives such as Eco-schools, STARS, Sustainable Development Goals, amongst others, we would like to hear from you. The Climate Charter is not another framework but a way for your school to show commitment to help the borough to achieve its net zero-carbon target for 2030.

Save energy and money whilst working from home
It is Big Energy Saving Week and with the majority of us continuing to work from home for the next few months, the Camden Climate Change Alliance has compiled some top tips for you and your colleagues to help save money on energy bills and reduce carbon emissions. Here are some highlights of the tips:
- Be careful with the kettle- Only boil the amount of water you need each time.
- Wrap warm and turn down your thermostat- Reduce the heat on your thermostat by 1°C to decrease your heating bills by up to 10%
- Take control of your heating- Use the timer to set your heating and hot water to come on when they are needed.
- Turn appliances off rather than leaving them on standby
