February 2021:
Indoor Season Update

February 1st, 2021
Dear KTFC Community,

Welcome back to track and field! We trust that you all had a restful holiday season and are feeling re-energized for 2021.

This will be another year full of changes for everyone, but I think we can all agree that they will be more positive as time goes on. We are thankful to be able to continue with our indoor youth programming. We are hopeful that a move to outdoor training in April will bring about a less restrictive environment for youth and open up programming for adults (22+) in some form.

All programming for athletes 21 and under resumed early January and new sessions for Mini Track Rascals (3-5) and Track Rascals (6-8) began as well. Additionally, KTFC hosted the Kamloops Start-up "In-Club" Meet on January 15th and 16th for ages 21 and under. We pivoted to an "In-Club" only meet to align with the restrictions and guidelines that were in place from BC Athletics at the time. The meet was a huge success.

Indoor Season Competition Update

Since our first "In-Club" meet in January, viaSport and BC Athletics have updated COVID guidelines around competitions for track and field and asked that we rebrand and redesign the format. We are currently permitted to run "In-Club Youth Performance Trials", which would essentially simulate a competition/meet. We are in the midst of working diligently with the City and viaSport to understand the guidelines and determine if it is feasible to host future competitive opportunities this indoor season. A tentative date of February 27th is booked. We will update membership as soon as possible.

Current Restrictions for Sport

The latest restrictions for sport are in place until at least February 5th, 2021. This includes the suspension of adult (22+) indoor programming. Youth indoor and outdoor group training and "In-Club Youth Performance Trials" may continue with enhanced safety measures pending facility support.

The latest update from BC Athletics, as of December 29th, 2020, can be read HERE

KTFC Protocols

An email was sent to membership on January 19th which included reminders of the current protocols that we have in place to protect athletes and coaches. We have reviewed these with coaches and athletes to ensure extra diligence is being taken given the recent increases of COVID-19 in SD73. We have recently revised training plans and event rotations, as well as hired additional coaches, to better support the 3m physical distancing guideline from viaSport. Furthermore, we received news that the City has granted private access to the track for KTFC athletes from 5-6pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays to better the health and safety of all participants.

Your continued cooperation with conducting thorough health assessments on your athletes before attending practice is greatly appreciated.

Recap: Kamloops Start-up Meet

We would like to extend our appreciation to the officials, parent volunteers, coaches, and athletes for making this event such a success. The energy and enthusiasm of everyone involved was infectious. We were happy to be able to provide this competitive opportunity to the young athletes. KTFC is the only club in the country that has persevered and navigated through the numerous guidelines to provide these opportunities to youth during this time.

Results

The full results from the Kamloops Start-up Meet can be viewed by CLICKING HERE.

Zibihi broke the BC record with a throw of 22.23m in the weight throw. Sean Lehmann's middle distance group had impressive early season results with everyone in the group achieving at least one PB in either the 3000m or 1 mile run. Some of our Track Rascals had their first opportunity to compete in long jump and the 60m. Our JDs and 13+ sprinters, hurdlers, and jumpers set some baseline results for the season.

Be sure to check out our Facebook and Instagram for images of the meet. Limited video was taken. Kindly contact Caitlin Reed at ktfccommunication@gmail.com if you are interested to see if your child's race was captured.

Outdoor Program Information

Indoor programs run until the end of March 2021. Registration remains OPEN for all programs except JDs (ages 9-12) which is FULL.

Outdoor registration will open on March 1st, 2021. Updated program offering days and times for the outdoor season will be posted on the website shortly.

Membership Fee Increase

The Board of Directors has recently approved a membership fee increase which will come into effect for the outdoor season which begins in April. Program fees will increase by approximately $25.00 per season, excluding Mini Track Rascal and Track Rascal sessions, which will remain the same. An updated fee schedule will be posted on the website shortly and shared with membership in the next newsletter.

The fee increase is due to increased costs associated with COVID which include, but are not limited to: hiring additional coaches to adhere to ratio requirements (athletes:coaches), sanitization and signage requirements, and a reduction in income producing opportunities. Fee increases are also essential from time to time to retain and educate highly qualified coaching staff and to cover increases in administrative and equipment costs.

Help Needed

Photo Finish Assistant - We are looking for someone to take over setting up and taking down the photo finish equipment at our meets that occur approximately 6 times per year. The individual would also be trained to learn the Hy-Tek photo finish system.

Volunteer Coordinator - This position involves creating a schedule of tasks and assigning parent volunteers for our track meets and fundraisers. It's a great way to get to know everyone, fulfill volunteer hours, and get a front row seat to the action!

Equipment manager - This would entail managing the set up and take down of all equipment for competitions. No special skills are required - just a happy face! Specific jobs would be assigned through the Volunteer Coordinator, but we need someone to take on a leadership role.

Please contact Caitlin Reed at ktfccommunication@gmail.com in you are interested in any of these positions.

Thank you!
