Even More MetrO

Head south this coming Saturday for MetrO 10 at Bibra Lake. There are only three events left in the 2020-21 MetrO Series, so come along, do a course and boost your place in the series standings.

2021 Membership Fees Now Due

Membership Card 2021
Have you completed your membership of Orienteering WA? Now is a great time for newcomers and Casual members to consider joining Orienteering WA, and for existing full members to renew their membership. (Although we know you, members need to show their 2021 membership card for EOD members' rates at events to confirm you've paid.  If you haven't been given your card yet, it should be available for you to collect.)

Membership fees are $50 for an adult and allow entry to all events up until 31 December 2021 at member rates.
Junior/Concession membership is $30 and family membership (2 adults and their children) is $100.
There is more information on the benefits of membership on the OWA website.

If you're likely to participate in at least 5 events in the next 12 months there is nothing to lose.
Log in to Eventor (first create an account if you don't already have one) and renew your membership or join!

Upcoming Event 1: Metro 10, Bibra Lake

Saturday 30th January

Bibra Lake (east side), Bibra Drive at Parkway Rd

The assembly area for this event is to the east of Bibra Lake, on the western side of Bibra Lake Drive, just north of the Parkway Road roundabout. There is a carpark on Parkway Road, close to the junction. There is some verge parking on Parkway Road and some on the west side of Bibra Lake Drive north of the assembly area.
The map area includes open parkland, many paths and tracks, some runnable forest, (almost) no roads and (definitely) no walking on water. Almost all the paths and tracks are suitable for prams and wheelchairs but many of the control markers are beyond arm’s reach of the paths.

Courses: Short (2-3km), Medium (4-6km) and Long (7-8km).
Pre-enter via Eventor (entries close at 23:59pm on Friday 29th January). If you do not have an Eventor account, click on ‘Create Account’ and follow the prompts.
Registration on the day at the event is available, from 4.15pm to 4.55pm, primarily for those wanting to enter as a group who cannot enter through Eventor. Make sure you arrive in plenty of time.
Bring: your SI card if you have one, or borrow one at the event. Also bring sunscreen, hat and water bottle.
On the day registration: from 4:15 pm.
Beginner's briefing: 4:45 pm.
Mass start: 5:00 pm, courses close 6:15 pm.
*Event support: KO

Upcoming Event 2: Metro 11, Claisebrook

Saturday 6th February

Mardalup Park, Brown St, East Perth

The penultimate event of the 2020/21 Metro season occurs on a (final?) new tRicky map at Claisebrook. A more central location couldn't be asked for. The area has a lot of history and you'd be hard pressed to recognise it if you were transported back in time 150 years. Orienteers in today's age will have their work cut out for them with a super compact course (it's on a 1:8000 map!) with plenty of parkland, roaring rivers (well the sauntering Swan at least), Claisebrook Cove, boarded bridges, plentiful pathways, hectic hills, streamlined streets, cafes, restaurants, and million dollar views. The map also includes the sites of the old East Perth power station and gasworks so you can check out a bit of history on your grand tour.

Come and enjoy what will most likely be tRicky's last ever Metro event setting in WA and prepare to be befuddled from the get-go in what could arguably be his finest work yet (subject to popular review). Unfortunately due to the nature of the area, wheeled vehicles are not really suitable because of the many stairs and the volume of pedestrian traffic likely through the area. Note also the parking limitations mentioned in Eventor and check out the document outlining special course setting symbols used for this event. There will also be one or two busy streets with the potential for crossing though there are underpasses available if planned correctly - the short course can be completed without crossing busy streets.

Courses: Short (2-3km), Medium (4-6km) and Long (8-9km). Long course longer than usual so as to include more route choice.
Pre-enter via Eventor (entries close at 23:59pm on Friday 5th February). If you do not have an Eventor account, click on ‘Create Account’ and follow the prompts.
Registration on the day at the event is available from 4.15pm to 4.55pm, primarily for those wanting to enter as a group who cannot enter through Eventor. Make sure you arrive in plenty of time.

Event Report: MetrO 9, Mullaloo

A very pleasant cool change with a sea breeze greeted us at Mullaloo. Controls had been set out both along the beach front, meaning plenty of sand in your shoes, and also throughout the parks and housing. Choosing a route between controls was tricky at times and kept us on our toes. There was a good turnup with 63 entries in total. On the Long course, Ricky Thackray was first finisher and Rachel West was the first female. First on the Medium course was Liam Dufty while Daisy McCauley was the fastest female. Richard Matthews took first on the Short course, and Jocelyn Nainby was the first female finisher.

Thanks to the setters, Sarah Richards and Andries Swart, for making the event happen. Thanks also to the LOST members who volunteered to help, including Mike Howe, Emma and Edward Plummer, Rosemary Kullman, Anna Napier, Helen Bailey, Robert Graieg, Ian and Jan Fletcher, Richard Matthews, Peter Gillon, Tony Simpkins, Nick Dale and Moreen Cox. Apologies if anyone was missed.

Results from the event are available in Eventor, and the series standings have been updated to include these results.
