#GIVINGTUESDAY 2020 WAS A CAMPAIGN OF GENEROSITY LIKE NO OTHER!
|
|
|
While the Giving Tuesday holiday parties, children performances, and in-person gift giving simply weren't able to happen, something special did occur - a sense of perseverance and love that inspired us all to come together to meet, and even surpass, all La Casa de Don Pedro's campaign goals!
We started out with three goals in December 2020: Distribute 750 bags of food to our families in need, hand out gifts to the 1,000+ children we serve, and collect $50,000 in funds to strengthen our programs and services! Today we're proud to announce that we've EXCEEDED ALL OF OUR 2020 GOALS!

DONOR SPOTLIGHT
ANNIE BASILE AND HER FAMILY & FRIENDS
|
|
At La Casa de Don Pedro, the Basile Family is a household name. La Casa’s most longstanding supporter and master of food and toy drives is Annie Basile. Together with her network of dozens of extended family and friends, Annie has been spreading joy and cheer to La Casa’s children and families for the past 14 years.
Annie’s family is rooted in Newark. Her parents emigrated to Newark from Italy in search of new opportunity. They built a home and raised a family that eventually settled in Newark’s surrounding communities.
Fourteen years ago, family friend and La Casa Board Member, Nicholas Scalera introduced the Basiles to La Casa de Don Pedro. It was an instant “perfect match.”

WOMEN IN FLAVOR & FRAGRANCE COMMERCE
|
|
Hellen Keller famously said, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” Taking that to heart is Women in Flavor and Fragrance Company (WFFC). After hearing about La Casa through a mutual friend and longtime supporter, Annie Basile, in 2015, WFFC decided they wanted to get involved with our Giving Tuesday Food Drive campaign.
Now a half decade later, we caught up with Erica Lermond, New Jersey WFFC board member and CEO of member company The Lermond Company. “WFFC is an organization founded and driven by volunteers and partnering with La Casa enables us to fulfill our desires to contribute to our NJ community.”

As a perennial La Casa de Don Pedro partner, the Bank of America Giving Tree (which includes the Hispanic/Latino Organization for Leadership & Advancement (HOLA) Employee Resource Group and several Merrill Lynch branches) has consistently answered our call for help. A trusted partner, Bank of America has jumped at almost every opportunity to give back with La Casa, including volunteering at community cleanups and at our annual community festival, Festival de la Familia. Giving Tuesday 2020 was no different, despite the obstacles presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.

JULIE MARTINEZ

When it comes to holiday toy drives, Julie Martinez (owner of Believe In Carriers Trucking) is as good as it gets. A La Casa de Don Pedro partner since 2017, Julie learned the importance of giving back while studying at Seton Hall University. She first heard about La Casa while volunteering with Seton Hall at La Casa at risk youth even. The genuine compassion she experienced from La Casa’s staff that day made a lasting impression on Julie, which led to our eventual partnership.
After starting her own small scale toy drive in 2015, Julie felt it was time to expand her reach. She remembered La Casa from her experience in college and got in touch with our Director of Program & Fund Development, Carrie Puglisi. “There was an instant connection, as I felt Carrie was extremely compassionate and shared some of the same goals I had for the community,” Julie recalls.
