New SIMAP functionality and an upcoming webinar

SPOTLIGHT: CLIMATE ACTION

On January 20th, the US recommitted to the Paris Climate Agreement

Colleges and universities have long been leaders in climate action. After the US did not sign the Kyoto Protocol, students around the country organized to encourage their campuses to commit to reducing their own greenhouse gas emissions. This led to the American College and University Presidents' Climate Commitment, which is now facilitated by Second Nature.

At the UNH Sustainability Institute, we are proud to support your efforts to calculate, track, and reduce your carbon and nitrogen footprints through SIMAP. At this critical moment in our history, we are grateful for all of the work that you do on your campuses to reduce your footprints and educate your communities about these important issues. We look forward to continuing to working with you all!

NEW FUNCTIONALITY IN SIMAP

2020 version of emission factors, biogenic report, new methods, and more!

On January 19th, 2021, we released new functionality in SIMAP:

Join us for a webinar on Wednesday February 3rd at 1pm ET for a demo of this new functionality. Register here for the webinar.

COMMUTING DATA ENTRY GUIDANCE

Given the very different commuting patterns in 2020 due to Covid, we are providing guidance for commuting data entry and we have made updates to commuting data entry in SIMAP. Be sure to follow these key points for your 2020 commuting data:
  • Enter multiple commuting entries as needed to reflect different commuting patterns in different time periods (e.g., before and after a campus shutdown)
  • If entering multiple data points by commuter, be sure that the number of weeks is correct for that time period.
We have also adjusted commuting data entry requirements to make it easier for you to reflect your unique campus situations. For example, commute modes no longer need to total 100%, and you can now enter multiple data entries by commuting type by date range.

We are not adding telecommuting as a commuting mode in SIMAP this spring. However, we will be adding it in the future as an additional mode as part of a broader update to commuting data entry. In the meantime, you can continue to exclude telecommuters from your footprint inventory. Please note that although telecommuting is not yet in SIMAP, telecommuting does have a footprint. For example, telecommuting requires off-campus electricity and heating usage.

You can view all of your commuting data entry and results on the Commuting Report, which can be found on the Reports tab.

UPDATES TO SIMAP SUBSCRIPTION TYPES

As of January 1, 2021, we are no longer offering "Basic" accounts in SIMAP

We discontinued the 2-month free "Basic" account in SIMAP. We will continue to offer Tier 1 and Tier 2 subscriptions. This change will help us better support SIMAP subscribers.

To ensure that this change does not result in campuses being precluded from assessing their carbon and nitrogen footprints, we are now offering:
  • Need-based fee waivers for Tier 1 subscriptions for SIMAP users that do not have the budget to cover the license fee
  • Additional complimentary Tier 1 or Tier 2 Research Accounts for campuses that are SIMAP subscribers
Both are available by application. Please contact us at simap@unh.edu if you are interested in applying for a need-based SIMAP account or an additional research-focused account.

NITROGEN WORKING GROUP LAUNCHING THIS WINTER

The first meeting will be held in the next month

The Nitrogen Working Group will lead research, development, application, and communication for campus nitrogen footprints.
The Nitrogen Working Group will be co-facilitated with nitrogen experts Jim Galloway and Libby Dukes from the University of Virginia. The working group will focus on several goals:
  • enhance outreach and communication around the campus nitrogen footprint,
  • address nitrogen emission factor gaps in SIMAP, and
  • provide recommendations for best practices on data collection and validation.
It's not too late to join! If you are interested in participating in this working group, please fill out this Google Form. More information about the Nitrogen Working Group can be found here
REPORTING SEASON IS UNDERWAY

We know that many of you are busy working on your greenhouse gas and nitrogen inventories! We are here to support you in those calculations.

Data Reviews: As an add-on service*, we offer a detailed data review with the SIMAP team. This process will provide a verification of your data and results. Check out this short video on data reviews to learn more about the process.

Resources tab: Check out more information about SIMAP on the Resources tab, such as the User's Guide, training videos and slide sets, and the FAQs page.

Contact us: We are here to answer your greenhouse gas and nitrogen inventory questions! Contact us by email at simap@unh.edu (preferred method), fill in the contact Google form, or leave us a voicemail at 603-862-2954. Please allow up to 3 business days for a response to your question.

* As of July 1, 2020, data reviews are add-on services and are separate from Tier 1 and Tier 2 subscriptions. Please contact us for more information.
