Farewell to YACWA's Mason Rothwell

It's with a heavy heart that we bid farewell to our Senior Policy & Advocacy Officer, Mason Rothwell last week.

Mason joined YACWA in 2017. It's hard to state the value he's had on our work for young people and the youth sector in since then, but it's clear the influence of his work on improving outcomes for young people in WA will be felt for years to come.

Some key examples of his work include leading the development of our COVID-19 Youth Recovery Framework last year, which has had a significant impact on State Government recovery efforts for young people. He's led much of our work in the youth justice space, supporting and championing cross-sector efforts to improve youth justice outcomes. He was a co-founder of the Youth Pride Network, and his foundational work is a significant factor in the YPN growing to become the state's first funded LGBTQIA+ peak body for young people.

More than anything, Mason's brought integrity, critical thinking and empathy into everything he's done in his time with us. His dedication to empowering and enhancing the voices of young people in our policy work is a testament to his passion and commitment to social justice. We're all better off, personally and professionally, having worked alongside him. We're sorry to see him go but so excited for what lays ahead. Thank you, Mason.

Farewell to eight members of the YACWA team

We're also sadly saying goodbye to several other members of the YACWA team whose contracts are coming to an end.

A huge thank you to Evelyn and Kai from the YEP Crew who are moving onto other opportunities. Evelyn has been vital to the YEP Team as a peer educator for the last year+, while Kai has been involved with YACWA for so many years as a part of YEP, a founder of the Youth Homelessness Advisory Council and so many other projects. Thank you both!

Thank you to Anne-Marie, who is finishing up as coordinator of the Youth Digital Inclusion Project for an amazing opportunity interstate.

And thank you to Rhiannon, Holly, Fin, Ash and Chey, who are all finishing up on the COVID-19 Youth Engagement Project that's produced the beautiful resources you've seen on our social media over the last six months.

Over 40 years ago, a small group of agitators, firebrands and troublemakers joined together to form a united front for youth workers in our state. That same activist spirit, fuelled by an undying commitment to the rights of young people, runs through everything we do at the Youth Affairs Council of WA.

As we move into this recovery phase, we’re faced with an extraordinary challenge. Young people are expected to be some of the hardest hit by this upheaval to employment, education and daily life.

By becoming a member, you’ll be supporting our small team of change-makers to fight for every young person in our state.
