My Peace I Give You
a three-part story told by Iraqi refugee in Jordan

Part 2
Ruaa Nofal, a twenty-year-old woman, and her family fled to Erbil, Iraq, after Da'ash terrorists attacked their home village. Her story continues below.

The people of Erbil did not receive us well because we were Christians. We were harassed and had to pay twice the price for groceries. Rent for our apartment was also very expensive.

While living in Erbil, we heard the situation had calmed down in our village. My father went back to recover some of our clothing and photo albums. When my father got to our village, he found our house had been burned from the inside and bombed on the outside. Everything in it was destroyed.

My father was crushed. He felt hopeless because we had lost everything. When my father returned to Erbil, he looked like a corpse. He was very sad, and his heart was broken. In a low voice, he told us that nothing remains for us in this life. We held each other’s hands and prayed God would help us get through this tragedy.

God helped me to see a blessing in our suffering: we had drawn closer as a family. Before this tragedy, we were each busy in our own lives and work, but now we stood next to each other. I felt like God was sending us a message, telling us we had lost all our possessions, but we did not lose each other.

We stayed in Erbil for four months until my father could get us a visa to travel to Jordan.

Part 3 - next week - Ruaa finds peace.
