Additional Events

Oxford Hydrology Group Meetings

Fridays in Hilary Term
11:30-12:30 GMT, starting 22 January (Weeks 1-8)

Details here.

The Oxford Hydrology Group is an enthusiastic group of students and staff members based at the University of Oxford with a shared passion around hydrology. Through weekly meetings, OHG seeks to share our knowledge and understanding among  members and keep up-to-date with all the latest developments in the field of hydrology. Our interests stretch from evapotranspiration in the Congo Basin to Earth observation and fluvial geomorphology to the impact of dams.

This group is open to anyone at the University of Oxford who is interested in doing something water related. OHG is keen on interdisciplinary work and so is not limited to hydrologists!

Specific topics include:
29 Jan-Machine Learning and Hydrology by Thomas Lee
19 Feb--Understanding the influence of tree cover and urban area on streamflow in the United States using multiple statistical attribution techniques by Bailey Anderson
early March--A talk with Dr Wouter Knoben-details to come.

How does ice flow and crack in a warming climate

Dr Ching-Yao Lai, University of Princeton
12:00 GMT, 5 February 2021 (Week 3)
Details here.
Dr. Lai will discuss (1) how meltwater triggers ice-shelf collapse through “hydrofracture”, which caused the catastrophic disintegration of the Larsen B Ice Shelf, and (2) how meltwater lubricates the interface between ice sheets and bedrock. She will introduce a new approach combining physics-based models and deep learning techniques to provide physical insights into the stability of ice fractures and predict the vulnerability of Antarctic ice shelves to atmosphere warming. Dr. Lai will discuss a new method combining theory with observations to understand the process governing the uplift of an elastic ice sheet caused by lake drainages, and reveal the seasonal changes of water lubrication between the ice sheet and bedrock.

Fieldwork challenges in water research: An interactive discussion on the challenges of water-related research fieldwork

12:00-13:00 GMT, 17 February 2021 (Week 4)
Details and registration here.

Water research is interdisciplinary creating a variety of fieldwork challenges from poor access to laboratory essentials to the ethics of engaging with vulnerable communities. Now the COVID19 pandemic has generated unprecedented disruption and uncertainty in research fieldwork. How can researchers better identify these challenges before beginning fieldwork and what are solutions to overcoming them?

This is NOT your typical lecture or brownbag because the speakers are you! Join us for this interactive hour to share your fieldwork experiences, ask questions, and find support related to your fieldwork—past or future! This will be a safe space with respect for fellow participants’ insights and conundrums.

Brought to you by the Oxford Water Network and the SoGE Fieldworkers Network
