Hope you're doing well.

The Roe Jan is one of the best trout streams in the area, partly because much of it runs through woods, which help keep the water cool in July and August. But long stretches of the stream also run through fields, where midsummer sun warms the water. Two years ago we helped the local Trout Unlimited chapter plant trees and shrubs along a section of the Roe Jan in Copake. Eight or ten of us from the RJWC, plus a larger group from TU, spent a 'long' half day, in glorious early June, planting dozens of trees. It was fun and rewarding, and a bit sweaty. Creating a stream-side buffer helps reduce erosion and flooding, shades the stream to keep the trout healthy, and provides valuable shoreline habitat.

Do you know of a place on the Roe Jan that could use some trees? If so, New York's DEC will provide the trees and shrubs, if we show up with the labor. We're looking for a place on the Roe Jan, or one of its major tribs, running through an open area, and we need a landowner that wants to participate in the Trees for Tribs program. The land can be public or private, and we can probably handle 50-100 yards. We'll help get things started, and when it's time to plant we'll put together a team to share the work.
