With international travel for pleasure still a long way off, that fact does nothing to slake our craving for airports, culture, touring, and tasting. Over the past several months we’ve shared tips on at-home travel nights, encouraging exploration through cuisine and trivia with the whole family, as well as transporting crafts for little ones. But for those with a wanderlust that cannot be cured with imported cheese, join us for a virtual journey through your home’s design. Dwayne Bergmann shares tips on how to layer collected treasures, introduce exotic textiles, celebrate original art, and capture the magic of exploration with a few key design decisions.
Everything in our home was made somewhere. Understanding where each element has traveled from can deepen your appreciation for them and might in turn inform your next buying decisions. Look around your home and you’ll see beautiful furnishings, interesting art, and enhancing accessories, but discovering that your sofa was hand-upholstered in Portugal, the art above your mantel was painted by an emerging female artist in Mexico City, and your favorite flower vase is signed by the South African potter who made it, the world may seem closer to home than you thought. Where a piece comes from – be it a textile or rug, raw material like wood and stone, or finished goods like furniture and accessories – dictates the technique used to make it. Certain parts of the globe still use time-honored skills passed down through generations of artisans. It’s important to know how the pieces in your home are made and by whom, not only for culturally rich design, but as a means of using your buying power to celebrate the artistry and materiality.
Like technique and fabrication, style can be traced back to its original roots as well. Painting interiors with broad strokes like Traditional, Art Deco, and Contemporary can sometimes blur the nuances that comprise their defining qualities. Furniture and fabric design in particular are often nods to their ancestral predecessors. To avoid the “shrine to French style” look, capture the style with elements peppered throughout the space. Pair powder blues with soft upholstered furnishings, trims and tassels with ornately carved wood furniture. Tres chic! Prefer a trip to Japan? Introduce accents like a dressing screen, pops of red, and high shine silks into your interiors to juxtapose East and West. Subtlety is best when layering design styles from across the globe in one’s home. Dwayne accomplishes this with exotic textiles, original art, and grouping like-styled pieces.
We all collect tangible memories through our travels, whether it’s a decorative object or something we use every day. Display these reminders of past trips throughout your home to satisfy your desire to travel… if only temporarily! Each piece invited into your home has its own story to tell. Strategically place them according to the memories they evoke and the stories they remind you of. For example, placing the hand-loomed rug you picked up on your trip to Morocco in your home office reminds you of the dedication to craft and hard work that went into each warp and weft, motivating you to reach your own professional goals.
When the world re-opens, be prepared with a list of take-aways to look for that are synonymous with their country of origin. France: antiques and all things lavender. The Netherlands: blue and white ceramics known as Delftware. Korea: beauty products. Mexico: bright patterned textiles. United Kingdom: linens and wool products. Africa: baskets and masks. Greece: Olive oil in counter top worthy bottles!
