When:        Wednesday February 10th, 7pm
Topic:         “Probable Cause”, a discussion of General Aviation accidents and the trend for 2021
Speaker:    Dan Gryder, CFI / Delta 777 Captain (retired)

For our second "virtual" meeting of the year we are having Dan Gryder back.  If you recall he spoke to us about "minimum Maneuvering Speed" last year, thanks to Dave Wimberly we got him back for this session.  Dan will be talking about a number of accidents and their probable cause.

About the speaker:
Dan Gryder has been a CFI for over 40 years, retired Delta 777 Captain and owns a DC-3 at Griffin, GA airport, (need a DC-3 rating?).  He is also a Youtuber with lots of other informative videos online.  You can see his channel by clicking here.  Please also subscribe to his channel so you can hear about his new videos.

As proof that he is a good sport, I want to point out this specific video by clicking here.  You will see Dan sporting a VASI Cap!  Thanks Dan...

As noted - he spoke to us before about maintaining minimum speed.  You can get a refresher on YouTube by clicking here and you will be a believer in his methods.

Recap of VASI January virtual meeting

The January VASI virtual meeting featured Dr. Anthony Rizzo.  Our topic was: "Pilot Fatigue - The Deadly Hazard".

Pilot Fatigue - Based on a USAF Class A accident investigation, this talk covered both Fatigue and the Pilot as well as aspects of a military aircraft loss investigation.

Discussion of enormous effects of fatigue on an air force ace.  Effects of sleep deprivation on human physiology put in easy to understand terms.  Bonus discussion of the origins of virus borne diseases and the effectiveness of the COVID vaccines.

VASI WORKING FOR YOU:

In the December VASI - NOTAM we mentioned the details of the Taxiway "E" extension (full length RW5/23) proposal and that this proposal included the demolition of the Southern end of Taxiway "C".  VASI President, David Wimberly and a committee consisting of Pete Fazio and Paul Cellecz met with Mark Cervasio, Airport Director and joined on conference call with FAA Orlando head of Planning for KVNC, plus other comments from Paul Hollowell.  The topic was preservation of the South end of Taxiway "C".

In the original project proposal, the designers citing that portion of Taxiway "C" is outdated in its design, and unnecessary for traffic flow originally planned to remove that portion.  But VASI committee made a solid case for keeping Taxiway "C" intact, pointing out that it is still heavily used by pilots - for example, after an engine check in the runup area, the easiest most direct path to RW5 or RW31 is by using taxiway "C" to "E". In addition, this section of taxiway can also be used to avoid conflicts on "E" with after landing aircraft proceeding to the ramp.

VASI Board is very happy to report that Airport management continue to be very supportive of our airport users and made a case with the FAA in support of our position.  Kudo's to Mark Cervasio for listening to us and taking action accordingly - He shared this email with us recently --

To: David Wimberly <wimbo320@gmail.com>

Dave,
You probably already know this, but I thought I would confirm for you.

The FAA concurs with the analysis I sent to them regarding not removing the section of Taxiway Charlie that abuts the Taxiway Echo extension.  The Echo design has continued without including the previously anticipated removal of that piece of Charlie.
