Keeping Connected

We're now into the second month of the third national lockdown and I'm not finding it any easier than the first time. But as I write this, there's blue sky and bright sunshine outside my window, the promise of Spring is definitely in the air and I am hopeful that better times are on the way.

In our latest newsletter there's a whole host of opportunities and activities that I hope you will find useful for yourself or for people you support. There's also a link to a blog post that I and Rahul Mittal from the University of Exeter wrote on aspects of social prescribing - we would really welcome your thoughts on this very current and relevant topic.

As always, if you have any news or projects in the field of arts and health that you would like to share, do let me have the details for inclusion in a future newsletter.

With best wishes

Jayne

Social prescribing in Cornwall - growing the contribution of the arts

I know many of you tuned into the recent webinar on Social Prescribing in Cornwall hoping to hear something from me regarding the role of arts, culture and creativity. Due to a number of technical problems on the day I didn't get a chance to make my contribution but Rahul Mittal and I have written a piece about what we think is needed to make social prescribing sustainable and to ensure that the valuable role of the creative sector is fully integrated. This is the first of a short series of articles looking at different aspects of this topic and the emerging findings of Rahul's research. (If you haven't already participated, the survey remains open and you can join in here.)

Arts Well: Connect

Our monthly networking session takes place on the last Thursday of each month, between 10 and 11 and our February and March sessions are open for booking now. These free, informal sessions provide an opportunity to connect up with others working in the field, share projects, ideas and challenges and hear latest news from Arts Well.

The meeting in February will be extended for an additional hour, from 11 until 12, specifically to discuss the Creative Health and Wellbeing Partnership for Cornwall and how we can make sure this is inclusive of all.

If you would like to join us you can book here for 25th February and here for 25th March. I hope to see some of you there.

Launch of Singing for Health Network

A national Singing for Health Network (SHFN) is being launched at a webinar on 24th February. This has grown from initial work and ideas in Cornwall and will be a resource available to anyone interested or involved in Singing for Health in the UK. The webinar will be recorded, so if you register and can’t make it, you will receive the recording afterwards. It will also be available on the website.

The SFHN aims to bridge research and practice and support the singing for health movement. It is a membership network, with the first year costing just £20. You can register for the webinar here and visit the Singing for Health Network website here

Tea, Cake and Art in Penzance

Tea, Cake & Art is a group for older people who experience isolation or loneliness and want to do something creative and meet new people. The group usually meets at The Exchange in Penzance and will do so again in the future. In the meantime, people can take part in weekly workshops on Zoom, or they can receive the workshop content by email or post to do in their own time.

The workshops use art materials easily found at home and are suitable for complete beginners. Activities include drawing, painting, collage, print-making, 3D work and people explore different themes and ideas, learn about art and artists and how they make work and try out new creative techniques.

Dance and Movement Workshops

Dance Centred are offering an exciting, creative and inclusive programme of dance open to all adults who want to get moving and invest in their mental health and wellbeing. The programme starts on 22nd February and runs right through to the end of March with a variety of sessions to suit everyone, online and hopefully outdoors too, depending on current restrictions.  All sessions are offered on a donation-only basis, pay what you can.  For more information head over to the Dance Centred website.

Your Creative Core

Your Creative Core is offering a range of live workshops and talks, including a free introductory online session. Created by artist Dr Ryya Bread, Your Creative Core aims to provide space to playfully explore, strengthen and celebrate your own creativity. I attended an introductory session yesterday and found it inspiring and valuable.

There are also some forthcoming 'Show and Tell' sessions featuring Cornwall-based practitioners which I'm sure will prove extremely interesting. Take a look at the website Your Creative Core.
