Join us on February 14th as Laurie Reid Dukes talks about caring for your trees. This presentation will cover proper tree planting, tree care, and issues to be on the lookout for to help your tree live a long and healthy life.
Laurie is the Assistant City Arborist for the City of Charlotte where she is responsible for administering the Neighborhood Tree Planting Program and enforcing the city’s Tree Ordinance as it relates to right of way trees. She holds a BS and MS in entomology, is an ISA Certified Arborist, and holds a TRAQ qualification.

50th Annual Tree Seedling Sale

The MSWCD will hold its annual tree seedling sale in March. A variety of 10 species will be available to purchase online or through mail. Find out more about the sale here. Trees must be ordered by February 25th.

New to gardening with native plants?
The photo above shows partridge-berry Mitchella repens, a subshrub recommended by Paula Gross and Dr. Larry Mellichamp as one of the best plants for going native in your garden.
Why is partridge-berry called a subshrub? According to the authors, it has woody stem growth although it only grows 1" tall. In dryish woods with shade to part sun, this plant forms an evergreen mat or colony. Twin white flowers appear in late spring followed by red berries all winter. Looking for an evergreen groundcover? This might be your plant.
