New to gardening with native plants?

The photo above shows partridge-berry Mitchella repens, a subshrub recommended by Paula Gross and Dr. Larry Mellichamp as one of the best plants for going native in your garden.

Why is partridge-berry called a subshrub?  According to the authors, it has woody stem growth although it only grows 1" tall.  In dryish woods with shade to part sun, this plant forms an evergreen mat or colony.  Twin white flowers appear in late spring followed by red berries all winter.  Looking for an evergreen groundcover?  This might be your plant.

You can learn more about the best native plants for your garden in Paula and Larry's new book The Southeast Native Plant Primer.  The UNCC Botanical Gardens offers copies of their book to purchase at this link:  https://bit.ly/3h8QoiF
