Mel's positive year A story!

Let’s face it, January isn’t everyone’s favourite time of year and the weather hasn’t been great. Along with this, we are all dealing with some hard challenges which are affecting all aspects of our lives.
Mel's inspirational story is about our Year AT. The group are such a positive bunch of people and strive every day to support each other and even staff on the programme. They remain proactive in engaging in sessions, both at home on Zoom, and face to face, and are very patient if there are any tech difficulties or staff changes. Regardless of this, they are still focusing on the future, developing their independent skills, and working just as hard to keep learning and progressing with us.
At the end of the day there is always an offer of help from everyone to clean up and make the room safe for the next group to use and they also keep good social distancing standards and offer reminders to one another if needed.
During these times I think everyone has found it hard to always remain upbeat, but Year AT excel at this and are an inspiration to us all!

Well done Year AT!

Spirit Forge sessions with Tanga

The young people in Social Activities and Building Futures year C got to experience wonderful sessions with Tanga. Within the sessions, the young people created Rap songs and also kept a journal to work through their emotions.

At first the young people struggled to engage in the programme. They were not engaged and disliked rap and any connotations to do with rap. Through weeks this slowly turned around as Tanga developed a fantastic rapport with the young people, working alongside them and helping them with their emotions.

Kirk our Year C Leader said "During the sessions the group itself went through some transformation and without a doubt we are extremly grateful to have had these sessions from Spirit Forge to help the young people to reflect on the events. The lyrics the young people came out with have not only helped them to reflect but also acted as an insight for me as a session lead to help and assist the young people with their mental health."

The development of the programme through weeks worked well. By giving the young people 2 sessions on each topic it allowed them to grasp the concept the first time and reflect and learn on the second.

Jason our Social Activities CoOrdinator told us that "By the end of the programme it was felt that everyone had gained confidence in the subject and were each able to communicate with more confidence. They all used their journals well and made weekly entries on ‘ Reflection ‘ of the day."

The ending Ceremony was fantastic as the young people felt truly listened to and held with high regards as they received their awards.

"At first I was sceptical of the programme when the young people presented resistance to the idea of rap and discussing their feelings openly. However, through watching each young person grow and develop over the short period of 6 weeks I truly believe that every group would benefit from Spirit Forge’s work." Kirk exclaimed.

In the Term Review with the young people when asked what was the best part of the last term some answered “Spirit Forge”.

One of our young people Jay told us "I really enjoyed doing the activities and the music"

And his mother Wendy added "I can say that Writing the diary helped Jay to focus on all the positive and interesting activities he was doing. All during a time when everything else around was grim."

The Session leader, Tanga wrote "Working on the ‘Spirit Journey’ programme with the young people at halow was a privilege that provided me with a great amount of inspiration. Experiencing the young people grow into themselves over the course of the six days of Rap Workshops helped remind me of the power of music and its capacity to transform our inner experience. Something that can often be seen as an inaccessible medium of self-expression to many was gently cracked open and played with in a collaborative effort. Alongside the musical work, the young people documented their experience in journals and engaged in conversational enquiry around the relevance of the themes we explored together, and how they show up in their everyday lives. By the end of the programme, in sharp contrast to the cautious curiosity of the initial workshops, both groups had evidently come into their own, writing and performing their own lyrics with passion and presence. It was a pleasure to witness the journey and I look forward to working with the young people in the future."

Thank you Tanga for leading these wonderful sessions and everything you inspired the young people to do.

Thank you Wilsons Stevens for funding this fabulous Journey!

Year B's amazing work!

On a snowy day in January, year B did litter picking around the nature reserve. They collected about half a bin bag full of rubbish! Very well done for all the hard work year B and for braving the cold!

Year B are currently doing a Conservation Building Communities project with 'Can Doers' and recently also recently enjoyed a great session on how single-use plastic affects the environment and especially how it harms sea life.

Did you know that without action, by 2050, there could be more plastic than fish in the sea?!

The young people did an amazing job creating plastic wave paintings to share on Social Media to raise awareness of this very important issue!

Happy baking for Openground Cafe at Baptist Church!

Whilst on furlough Alex, our BFG Project Worker, is keeping busy as a volunteer for the Open ground Cafe at Guildford Baptist Church in the company of Ruth, who used to be our lovely Project Worker. She has baking lovely cakes. Brownies, flapjacks, and of course creating cups of awesome handcrafted coffee… Mmm, sounds great. It is so important to enjoy little things every day and support the local community. Alex would like to say 'thank you Openground Cafe for this delicious adventure'.
