Vaccine Update
The state has launched a statewide pre-registration system for individuals 65 and older and frontline health care workers. Individuals may now pre-register for vaccine appointments and be notified when appointments are available by visiting myvaccine.fl.gov or by calling 866-201-5420 or TTY (TeleTYpewriter) 833-476-1525.
The following populations of Florida Residents are currently eligible to schedule an appointment to receive the vaccine:
- Individuals 65 years of age and older
- Long-term facility residents and staff
- Healthcare personnel with direct patient contact
- Individuals deemed to be extremely vulnerable to COVID-19

- Tilling of the Beach
- As part of the Beach Management Program, Brevard County’s contractor will be tilling the beach in Cape Canaveral during the next few weeks. The purpose of tilling is to remove the erosional drop-off that has formed thus making it easier for sea turtles to access the beach to lay eggs. The tilling will be completed prior to March 1, 2021 - the beginning of sea turtle nesting season in our area.
- Lincoln Avenue Sewer Improvements
- The City’s contractor continues with sanitary sewer improvements on Lincoln Avenue between Poinsetta Avenue and Orange Avenue. The work includes the replacement of the sanitary sewer main and laterals. Please be aware that this work (1) disrupts traffic flow and (2) includes lane/road closures for extended periods. During the project, Lincoln Avenue will be closed to through traffic until March 10, 2021. However, the roadway will be open to residents on Lincoln Avenue.
- West Central Boulevard Improvements Project
- For the week of February 8, 2021, the contractor completed all hook-ups of sewer laterals to the new sewer main. In addition, three artesian irrigation wells were properly abandoned since they were no longer in use. New curbing/driveway aprons are currently being constructed and grading of the new roadway/pedway base material continues.

City Council
- Finalized, posted and distributed agenda and packet for February 16, 2021 Regular Meeting.
- Began preparing and reviewing agenda and items for March 16, 2021 Regular Meeting.
BID #2021-01 – SCADA IMPROVEMENTS
- Continued distributing Bid/Project information and documents to interested parties.
- The due date/location for the Bid packet submittals and the Bid Opening will be at City Hall on Thursday, March 11, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. and 2:05 p.m., respectively.
COVID-19, Hybrid (in-person & remote), Staff Meetings and other items
- City Clerk’s Office Staff continued following federal, state and local social-distancing and PPE.
- Met with City Manager and continued researching and meeting with potential Strategic Planning consultants in preparation for the annual Strategic Planning Retreat tentatively scheduled for March 31, 2021.
- Met with City Attorney regarding elected official Office Accounts procedures for filing officers and reviewed public records requests.

- Actively monitoring COVID-19 pandemic and communicating information as needed.

- Met with City Clerk to review credentials and speak with potential Facilitators, details and logistics in preparation for the 2021 Strategic Planning Retreat, tentatively planned for March 31.

- Met with Leisure Services Director and Finance Director to review budgeted items for the Multi-Generational Facility.

- Week ending 2/12/21
- A letter was distributed to all neighboring residences of Canaveral City Park. W&J Construction distributed over 100 envelopes on Tuesday, February 9, 2021.
- Digging of footers for envelope of building, columns and elevator pit took place.
- Demolition of old concession restroom building commenced.
- Connection of temporary power to construction site was completed.
- Temporary fencing was installed on the south and south east perimeter of the park for civil site work to commence next week.
- Week of 2/15/21
- Traffic on Harrison Avenue will be diverted to one-way, heading east, between Orange and Magnolia Avenues. The west bound side of the road will be closed for construction for approximately 45 days commencing the week of February 15 and lasting through April.

- The Monday Night Tennis League’s final match is set between Gary and Andre. Stay tuned for the winner! The next Monday Night League is already registered eagerly awaiting the start of the new season on February 22.
- The Wednesday Night Tennis League kicked off its new season this week. Eleven players are registered; ten will take to the court Wednesday evenings at the Nancy Hanson Recreation Complex. Scores, schedules and standings for the Wednesday Night Tennis League can be found online!
- Pickleball is bigger than ever at the Nancy Hanson Recreation Complex. Leagues that are currently in season are Men’s and Women’s Singles and Mixed Doubles. Just one week into the season, the race for the Championship is already heating up! Janie and her partner Tony are the team to beat after Janie won 1st Place in both divisions at the 2nd Annual Space Coast Paddle Battle. Registration for Men’s and Women’s Doubles can be found online. The Men’s and Women’s Doubles season are scheduled to begin the last week of February.
- The Adult Co-ed Kickball season opener is scheduled for February 17, with the first game starting at 6:15 p.m. Games will be held at Canaveral City Park every Wednesday evening at 6:15 p.m., 7:15 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. Teams are registered and building their rosters, hungry for the opportunity to take down the long time Champions of Cape Canaveral, B.O.A.F. Scores, schedules and standings for the Adult Co-ed Kickball League will be kept up to date online!
- Wednesday Night Racquetball is in full swing, now in its sixth week. Roger remains undefeated at 4-0, but Greg and Tony are not far behind with a current record of 4-1. Players have until the end of the regular season to make up any matches they missed. Come Playoff time, the top eight seeds will compete for the Championship. Scores, schedules and standings for Racquetball can be found online!

COCC Marks 31 Years of "Tree City" Designation
Recently the City of Cape Canaveral received a letter from the Arbor Day Foundation congratulating the City for continuing its designation as a Tree City. Currently, Cape Canaveral is one of only 3,600 communities nationwide to have this honor. The City has proudly held this designation since 1989. Founded in 1972, the Arbor Day Foundation is the largest 501(c)3 nonprofit membership organization dedicated to planting trees and other reforestation efforts. The foundation has more than 1 million partners and supporters that together have helped to plant more than 350 million trees in neighborhoods, communities, cities, and forests throughout not only the U.S. but the world.
To qualify for the Tree City status, communities must meet four core standards. First, someone must be responsible for the care of all trees, this usually includes a professional forester or arborist (the City currently has an on-staff arborist); second, a Tree City must be guided by a tree care ordinance (Article II. - Tree Protection); next, a community must designate a portion of its budget toward planting, care and removal of City trees (Sec. 102-54. - Tree replacement standards); and last, a community must recite an official Arbor Day proclamation and demonstrate support for Arbor Day.
The City takes green infrastructure and its urban canopy very seriously, for trees (and plants) can provide numerous environmental, economic, and social benefits. Such benefits include reducing stormwater runoff into the lagoon, improving air quality, lowering local temperatures, and sequestering carbon dioxide emissions. Recent examples of large-scale tree plantings in the City include the planting of over 350 new native trees at the Long Point Estuary property in 2019, 18 red mangroves along the City’s lagoon shoreline through its Adopt-A-Mangrove Program in 2020, and in 2021 at Canaveral City Park the City will be planting 2,781 new native and Florida friendly trees and plants (95 trees and 2,686 plants) in order to mitigate the loss of 71 existing trees at the site for the Multi-Generational Facility; increasing the park’s species diversity and overall canopy and ground coverage.
The City will apprise residents of new plantings, best management practices, and make available educational resources via our partner organizations as often as possible.
