Share the Love!

Over the weekend, children received a Valentine Bag from their teachers at church!  One reason we sent these out a week early was so that kids have the opportunity to share the love - that's right, each bag contains a card, envelope & paid postage for kids to create a Valentine's card and send to someone this week!  Parents, I hope you'll take a few minutes in the next few days to help your child complete this project.  If you don't know who to send your card to, let me know and I'll get you a name and address of someone in our church who would love to get a card from your child!
Kids also received a craft project with a note to save that craft for our zoom session this coming Sunday, February 14 - it will be fun to do that together with our friends (and maybe a little help from parents of our younger kids).  We look forward to seeing your kids on Sunday morning over zoom!  And for those who want to attend worship in person, don't forget to RSVP here by Thursday: www.fbc-h.org/reservations, childcare is available for ages 4 and under by reservation.
This week in Worship (in English), Pastor Stacy will continue with her sermon series gRACE, addressing the issue of race.  If you missed her sermon this past Sunday, you can find it here: www.facebook.com/fbchuntersville.  Pastor Rafael will be preaching (in Spanish) from Psalm 91.
Please let me know if you have prayer requests, needs or concerns.  Take a look below at the reminders, upcoming happenings and some tips for talking to your children about race.

"Children will light up the world if we don’t keep them in the dark"

Dr. Lucretia Berry is the anti race/racism curriculum specialist for the Community School of Davidson, right in our backyard! Though she is a Lake Norman resident, she has become internationally known for co-creating Brownicity, "many hues, one humanity," an organization "dedicated to advocacy, education, and support for racial healing and antiracism." The reason I am introducing Dr. Berry is because she has a lot of good advice for us on how we can talk to our children about race/ism.  I encourage you to watch her 14-minute TedTalk: Children will light up the world if we don't keep them in the dark
And I encourage you to start a conversation about race this week with your kids.  Dr. Berry gives the advice that we can talk to our kids about race through the lens of learning.  For example, you could start by saying, "this week I learned about melanin."  Or "this week Pastor Stacy started a sermon series dealing with race; do you know what race is?" Asking your kids about their understanding of  the word "race" will help you know where they are and what they have already "learned" whether from TV, school or otherwise.  As Pastor Stacy mentioned in her sermon, race is a way we (humans in recent history) have categorized groups of people based on the color of their skin. However, in Scripture we do not find this way of categorizing people, but we do find that God loves diversity!
This week, let's talk about skin tone and melanin.
Melanin is the pigment that gives human skin, hair, and eyes their color. Dark-skinned people have more melanin in their skin than light-skinned people have. Melanin provides some protection again skin damage from the sun.  If you are in an all white family, you could point out the difference of your ancestors' place(s) of origin compared to your black or brown friends.  For example, my friend Whitney's ancestors lived closer to the equator and needed more melanin to protect them from the sun, but my ancestors lived further away from the equator and didn't need as much melanin. Help your children see that all skin tones are beautiful.

Thank you to all our teachers and volunteers who donated or gathered supplies, assembled treat bags, and delivered these Valentines bags!
