Canada and the United States Must Work Together to Help Latin American Refugees

Former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, WRMC Chair Lloyd Axworthy, former El Salvadoran minister of foreign affairs Mayu Brizuela de Ávila and WRMC President Fen Osler Hampson published an Op-ed in The Globe and Mail calling for Canada-US cooperation to address the ongoing crises in Venezuela and Central America.  Read

Refugees, Education and Conflict

 
The WRMC and United States Institute for Peace hosted a conference discussing the policy linkages between refugees, education and conflict. During the event, three panelists — Marc Sommers, Sarah Dryden-Peterson and Suha Tutunji — discussed refugee education policies and practice, and the implications of limited access to education for refugee youth.  Watch 

Refugees, COVID-19 and Access to Education

 

On International Day of Education, WRMC VP of Research Elizabeth Ferris and moderator of the event on education, discussed the situation facing refugee children at the moment. Not only have they been impacted by conflict and crises, leading them to flee their home countries, but they have also been particularly hard hit by the measures taken to control the coronavirus pandemic, including access to education.  Read 

 

The WRMC is partnering with the Institute for Canadian Citizenship to develop and advance a set of corporate social responsibility principles in collaboration with corporate entities that are already committed to the hiring of refugee and migrant workers.  Learn More

As part of the WRMC’s project seeking innovative solutions for the global governance of climate displacement, this panel discussion will explore gaps in international governance and legal protection frameworks for the forcibly displaced.

The WRMC’s Rosemary McCarney will moderate the discussion with Robert McLeman from Wilfrid Laurier University, Erika Pires Ramos of the South American Network for Environmental Migrations, and A.R. Siders from the University of Delaware.
