Pandemic or not, the first round of institutional investments is a huge milestone for all founders. With VC’s rejecting 98% of the startups they meet with, the pathway to becoming that exceptional success story is one filled with twists, turns, and blockades of all kinds.

In his recent Medium article, SkyDeck Fund Managing Partner Chon Tang outlines stories of unconventional victories and the lessons all founders should learn from them.

SkyDeck startup founder sheds insight on the necessity of an accelerator during COVID times
Pablo Laurino, CEO of Publica, wasn’t sure whether joining an accelerator would be the right move for his startup, but three months into the current cohort, he believes he made the right decision. In this Q&A, Pablo shares his thoughts on why he chose to join SkyDeck as well as words of wisdom for fellow startup founders. Publica is a startup that streamlines the publication process so owners can sell, market, and share directly to their customers.

SkyDeck: For international startup founders like yourself who were not sure whether to join an accelerator, you now have some perspective. What has been the most helpful aspect of participating in SkyDeck?

Pablo: We have learned so much about fundraising in the U.S. and in the Silicon Valley. This market is different from the rest of the world, and we have learned how to both set company valuations as well as set expectations as founders. The SkyDeck Team — Caroline, Brian, and the others — everyone knows a lot about fundraising and has been eager to help. Personally, I have learned a lot about storytelling and the importance of storytelling. Even if you are a super technical person, it is so important to tell a compelling story to investors.

SkyDeck: What was an unexpected benefit of joining SkyDeck?

Pablo: When we joined we didn’t really consider the fact that being part of SkyDeck could bring benefits to our entire team. There’s such a breadth of workshops catering to every single aspect of a startup that pretty much there’s a workshop for every type of role in your startup. We opened the SkyDeck program to all the managers on our team to attend and it was really energizing for the rest of the team. We have also begun to implement KPIs company-wide as a suggestion from our advisors, and this has helped focus the entire team greatly.

SkyDeck: Growth and success are measured differently for each individual. What would you say your metrics are, and how has SkyDeck helped you achieve them?

Pablo: We entered SkyDeck because we were proactively trying to enter the U.S. market. For metrics on this aspect, our focus has been on customers and we have partnered with two big brands and two smaller publishers. SkyDeck definitely played a large role in this, providing proof in our services. We also planned to raise our Series A in the U.S., and thanks to SkyDeck, we are definitely in a strong position to do that. Investors do take into account the valuation we got from SkyDeck, and they appreciate SkyDeck’s role in helping startups focus and grow.

SkyDeck Pitch Showcase shines light on Innovation Partner and HotDesk Startups

SkyDeck’s Innovation Partner and HotDesk Showcases last week were a rousing success! Featuring 11 startups ranging from cleantech to fintech, the Global Innovation Partner (GIP) Program is dedicated to carving a unique pathway for international startups to access the talent and investors from the Bay Area. In the HotDesk showcase, 28 teams presented on a variety of pitches covering ideas on life science, digital health to consumer software, edtech and beyond.

"A little over a year ago, we realized there was a need to create more opportunities to shine a spotlight on the growing number of talented HotDesk and Innovation Partner startups. That’s why we launched these pitch showcases," said Sibyl Chen, SkyDeck’s Senior Director of Program. "Many of these startups are able to connect with interested investors and advisors. We plan on continually expanding the number of opportunities for our startups to get noticed."
