...Unitrans is moving towards electric vehicles!
ASUCD Unitrans received a federal grant last year to add five more battery electric buses to its fleet. Combined with other sources of funding, Unitrans can purchase 11 new electric buses. The first five or six electric buses are expected to begin service in Fall 2021.
Currently, the existing Unitrans bus fleet runs on compressed natural gas. The Unitrans electrification project, which includes adding electric charging infrastructure for the buses, is expected to be completed by the early 2030s.
As Camille Kirk, our Director of Sustainability, noted in a UC Davis article, " “Unitrans’ electrification efforts hits on all aspects — not only will the buses be fueled by renewably produced electricity to lower greenhouse gas emissions, but they also reduce air pollution, provide new opportunities to learn about operation of an electric bus fleet and will reduce costs."
