Students are invited to join any of our upcoming online information sessions to learn more about Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) awards for the study of critical and less commonly taught languages at UW-Madison.
FLAS fellowships are funded by the U.S. Department of Education and administered by the UW's area & international studies centers to assist students in acquiring foreign language proficiency.
Summer awards offer up to $7,500 in tuition and stipend support for both undergraduate and graduate students; academic awards offer up to $15,000/year in tuition & stipend funding for undergrads and $15k stipend + full tuition for graduate students!
Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States. The application deadline is February 15, 2021.

Look no further than SASLI 2021! SASLI, based at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is an eight-week intensive summer language program, offering courses in the following languages: Bengali, Dari, Gujarati, Hindi, Marathi, Nepali, Pashto, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Sinhala, Tamil, Tibetan, and Urdu.

Like last fall, Chinese tables are virtual this semester. Our first Chinese Table will be this Friday, February 5th! What is Chinese Table? Glad you asked -- Chinese Table is a platform for Chinese enthusiasts, students, and native speakers to converse in mandarin and learn from each other! "Rooms" will be split into beginner, intermediate, and advanced proficiency so all are welcome. Plus, if you're in a Chinese language class, you will earn extra credit! Chinese tables will be held from 4:30-5:30 pm Central Time every Friday.
Already an expert or a native Chinese speaker? Come and help -- we're always looking for volunteers!

On-campus spaces are available for students to use to participate in online courses, to study and take online exams. View a list of available spaces. Face coverings and physical distancing are required at all times.
If students specifically need a quiet space to take an exam, they can request an exam room reservation for one or more of their online exams. Computers can also be requested.

Malaysian politics is like a long-running soap opera, replete with bizarre plot twists and aging stars who don't seem to recognize they can no longer cavort as in days of yore. Keeping up is a monumental task, but one I’ll attempt with the help of Malaysians, who kindly supplied me with survey data back in Fall 2019, and yesterday’s newspaper, which will doubtless demonstrate the folly of trying to stay current.
The applications for 2020-2021 College of Letters & Science Continuing Students Scholarships are currently open for application. There are two L&S continuing student applications – one for currently enrolled First Year Students who enrolled fall/summer 2020 and another for Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors (who will be enrolled fall 2021).
The application due date is Monday, February 15, 2021.

Spring 2021 Virtual Career Fairs for all majors are just around the corner, taking place February 10 – 25. There are many great opportunities for students to meet online with employers to find full-time jobs and internships in a variety of interest areas and roles, or to ask questions and learn more about employers and career options.
These fairs will again be held on the Handshake virtual fairs platform, so students will need to activate their Handshake accounts to participate.
LEAP is excited to announce that applications for the 2021 LEAP Emerge: Summer Internship Program are open!
LEAP Emerge is an eight-week paid summer internship program designed to develop emerging young leaders by providing college students with practical leadership skills and the opportunity to work virtually in a community-based organization serving the Asian and Pacific Islander Community.
Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, LEAP has made the decision to move the Emerge 2021 Program to a virtual platform. The internship component will also be held virtually where interns will have the opportunity to work with a community-based organization serving the Asian and Pacific Islander community virtually 4 hours for 4 days per week. This program will continue to run for 8 weeks from June 14 - August 6, 2021. 4 hours per day from Mondays - Thursdays, starting June 22, 2020 to August 6, 2020.
Interns will be compensated at an hourly rate of $15 per hour.
Looking for a valuable way to use your language skills outside of the classroom? Be a language tutor through Badger Volunteers. Opportunities are available for: Korean, Japanese, Arabic, French, Spanish, Italian, and Russian.
Registration opens on Tuesday, January 26. Orientation for tutoring will take place February 1-5 and the program duration is February 8-April 23, 2021.
The Office of Sustainability Internship is a year-long program in which student teams work to raise awareness of sustainable practices, influence consumer behavior, and train partners across campus in individualized strategies for implementation. Interns work closely with campus offices, departments, and auxiliary units like University Housing or the Wisconsin Union. Students can expect to gain concrete knowledge of sustainability solutions as well as professional development training in an upbeat, collaborative environment. The student intern program is open to any undergraduate who is passionate about sustainability, regardless of major.

The Math Learning Center will be starting their tutoring services on January 31 with quite a bit to offer this semester.
Drop-in Tutoring:
We continue to offer drop-in tutoring for courses from Algebra through Calculus. There is some tutoring hours for Math 240 as well. The lab is staffed by undergraduates and Math TAs. Students can access the drop-in tutoring by self-enrolling in the Math Learning Center Canvas site. This semester we have split the labs depending on the course students are taking, for the most up to date schedule and direct links to the sessions click thislink. Additionally, students can pose questions on Piazza for their course and tutors will answer the questions during open lab hours.
Small Group Tutoring:
We are offering small group tutoring to anyone who taking Math 113, 114, 211, 213, 217, 221, 222, and 234 and is interested. Students do not need to fill out an application to be part of the small group tutoring. In the small group tutoring students will work on supplemental problems to gain a deeper understanding of the topics. The small groups are staffed by Frank, Oumar, and Math TAs. Please encourage your students that are interested to attend on a regular basis for the most benefit. Students that are interested should self-enroll in the Tutoring Canvas site for their course. The links are provided in this table.
The MLC Canvas site contains many great resources for students. For students that need a quick brush up on specific topics for Algebra and Calculus there are Boosters to Start your Course. There is a Study Skills Workshop (available the first week of February), the workshop focuses on study skills for success in mathematics courses. Search for Teammates in Piazza will help group students together in that want to work in groups. Last, there is a list of the other Tutoring Resources offered by the Math department and other places around campus.
Have you been thinking about completing the UW-Madison Leadership Certificate? The Center for Leadership & Involvement (CfLI) would like to invite all UW-Madison students (undergraduate, graduate and professional) who are interested in learning more about the Leadership Certificate to attend one of three upcoming virtual Informational Sessions.
The Orientation format will be a general overview geared toward students who are just beginning the Leadership Certificate application process. Through interactive group work we will discuss questions you may have about your specific leadership experiences.

American Councils for International Education is hiring short-term Resident Directors for summer language immersion programs abroad for American high school and college students studying one of 15 critical languages including:
Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, and Urdu.
Resident Directors must be proficient in the target language and typically have experience studying, working, or traveling in the host country. They are responsible for promoting student success by ensuring the health and safety of program participants, helping them to maintain a language policy, and assisting them in acclimating to life in the host country. In-country partner institutes are responsible for administering the academic curriculum. Therefore, the Resident Director position is a non-teaching position.

Apply to Graduate
The “apply for graduation” action notifies your school/college that you plan to complete your degree requirements in a specific term. This allows the staff of your school/college to begin evaluating your degree accomplishments in preparation for graduation.
Note:
You will be able to apply for graduation in a term any time before the degree conferral date, at which point a term will be removed from the options. Contact your academic dean's office if you have missed the deadline.
If you want your name in the commencement program, you need to apply for graduation before the deadline announced by the Chancellor’s Office.
Graduate students who apply will still need to contact their major program to request a degree warrant from the Graduate School on their behalf.
