Welcome @ Greenways
Cory Cliffe

Cory is Greenways' new Urban Watershed Coordinator: "My lineage comes from the Likwiltok people aka Wei Wai Kum We Wai Kai. I graduated from the Stewardship Technicians Training Program at VIU, as well as my degree in parks law and its administration. My passion is working in the environment and I operate on an ancestral platform of planning for seven generations ahead. This year I'll be on the Greenways team helping coordinate the urban watershed restoration project. I have been super excited about this opportunity to work closer with the Greenways staff after working in partnership for approx. four years. This is a great program with an excellent team of staff and volunteers so I can't wait to get into the field season.

My dream is quickly becoming a reality of starting a non-profit society of my own to recruit and mentor First Nations youth in environmental stewardship. One thing I tell myself every day is 'we walk in the footsteps of our ancestors, those who preserved what we have today. They planned ahead for US and now it is our turn to plan for the next generations'."

Welcome @ Greenways
Melody Fraser

Melody is our new Community Engagement Coordinator: She is originally from northern Ontario and has spent the past few years bouncing between Vancouver Island and Alert, Nunavut where she previously worked with Environment and Climate Change Canada. In her new role with Greenways, she is thrilled to be working with classes in SD72 on environmental education and restoration initiatives to improve the health of Campbell River’s streams and forests.

Melody also supports Campbell River’s Urban Streamkeepers and Adopt-a-Trail stewards. She is the point of contact for anyone who would like to get involved with Greenways! In her leisure time, Melody loves to cook and frolic in the snow on Mt. Washington, which reminds her of home.

Project Update
Strathcona
Good Food Box

363 boxes distributed, and counting: The Strathcona Good Food Box Program really expanded in the month of January. In addition to continuing the program in Gold River, we did a trial run in Kyuquot, moved the existing Tahsis program to fall under the Strathcona Good Food Box umbrella, and launched the beginning of the Zeballos program.
At of the end of January we will have distributed more than 6,400lbs of produce to more than 130 households. Of the 363 boxes distributed, 127 have been subsidized and 14 have been donated by local community members. Excess produce totaling more than 180lbs has been donated to local school foods programming and local produce stands. We are excited to be exploring opportunities to add more local food into the boxes for the upcoming growing season to support sustainably-produced food from our local food producers.

We are soon expanding the program into Sayward and Campbell River! We are still looking for a Community Coordinator for the Campbell River portion of the program. This individual will oversee the collection of orders and payments, liaise with community members regarding the project, and coordinate both volunteers and box pickup. If you or someone you know is interested, please send a resume to Good Food Box Coordinator, Katie, at katharine@greenwaystrust.ca, or contact for more information.
