NEW!
We are always striving to promote various facets of Japanese culture in different ways. Without having the chance to interact in person, we have actively been presenting Japanese culture online with “Japan House Shares” twice a month, but we thought it might be nice to create another manner in which we can share discernments about Japan in a new section on our website entitled, “Kokoro Insights.”

Using Gunji Sensei’s favorite word, “kokoro,” which translates to “mind, heart, and spirit,” this new page will share thoughts from the Japan House family’s kokoro! The first insight will be written by Gunji Sensei who will explain and interpret, “kokoro.”

Following her, the newest additions to the Japan House family, Trevor Graham and Peter Davis — two University students who sought out Japan House and asked to be a part of what we do and share — will be writing regularly for the spring semester! We are so pleased to have them participate to reveal fun and entertaining curiosities about Japan that will include food, mythology, little known facts, contemporary culture and so much more!

We hope you enjoy, “Kokoro Insights.”

Japan House Shares

Join us Sunday, February 14 at 4pm
as we present our next in the
Japan House Shares series,“Year of the Ox”.

The Lunar New Year, most commonly associated with the Chinese New Year or Spring Festival, typically falls sometime between January 21 and February 20 annually. This year, the Lunar New Year is on February 12th. It's called the Lunar New Year because it marks the first new moon of the lunisolar calendars traditional to many East Asian countries, and marks the transition from one animal to the next.

2021 is the Year of the Ox. It is the second animal in line after the Rat, followed by Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and finally Pig. Each animal has particular traits and those born in that year are said to be influenced by their animal sign when it comes to things like personality traits, romantic compatibility and even what fortune, or misfortunes, are in the future.

The Lunar New Year is a time of celebration and people often create a variety of contemporary and traditional foods to honor and highlight the animal of the year. We decided to pair with Suzu’s Bakery (Japanese Bakery in downtown Champaign) to see what they could create for this special Year of the Ox. Watch as Alex prepares a delicate “Cow Roll Cake” that is beautiful to look at and even more delicious to eat.

Watch. Learn. Eat. Sounds like a good plan for the New Year!

Watch the YouTube Premiere video with the Japan House Staff at 4pm where you can LIVE CHAT! Make sure you log in a few minutes early to see the countdown. If you would like to watch the Japan House Shares videos at your leisure, they are available online indefinitely. CLICK HERE
