2021 is off to a great start for the Claymobile crew! We've continued with virtual programming using online platforms and clay kits with partners throughout the city, zooming into classrooms and homes in every Philadelphia neighborhood! We even took our 2021 Claymobile Creations exhibition online to celebrate the work students made with us in programming fall. Our format for Claymobile might be a little different than years past, but our commitment to bringing clay to our community is more evident than ever. Providing outlets for creative expression is essential!
Spotlight: CORA Services Claymobile Residency
Sentiments from our Community Engagement Teaching Artist, Drew Schenck...
The Claymobile started working with CORA Services in October of last year. While we taught virtually, students were all together in person at the site. We designed a special 8-week curriculum of both functional and sculptural projects specifically for CORA. It started with low-fire earthenware projects we picked up, glazed, and fired for students and it ended with air-dry clay projects. Most students had never worked with clay, but immediately fell in love with the material. When the city went into another shutdown in November, our students pivoted to at-home programming but stayed engaged. They showed up to our Zoom session every week on time and ready to go. Giving each student their own kit for the program allowed us to stay flexible with changing restrictions and allowed students to attend Claymobile no matter where they were.
