What’s fruiting in the Botanic Gardens?

We love the red fruits of some of our native plants!

Vitex melicopea - The fruits of native Vitex melicopea, commonly known as Red-fruited Vitex can be found along the bottom pathway at Monsoon Waterway in the Botanic Gardens. Red-fruited Vitex is endemic to Queensland, and can be found between South East Queensland and Torres Strait in gallery forests and drier rainforests.

Phaleria clerodendrum - Another one of our natives, Phaleria clerodendrum, commonly known as the Scented Daphne is fruiting in the Tropical Shade Garden. These brightly coloured fleshy, egg-shaped fruits grow on the trunk of the tree, which enable small animals that cannot fly to feed on the fruit and disperse the seeds. They can be found in North East Queensland in well developed lowland and upland rainforests.
