Entering Into Lent

In the Christian Year, Lent is a time of preparation--preparing us as worshippers to remember the significance of Christ’s death and the celebration of his resurrection.  It begins on Ash Wednesday (February 17) and encompasses 40 days (not counting Sundays) leading up to Easter (April 4).

During this time of isolation and limited mobility due to the pandemic we can appreciate reorientation of Lent for us as a time of reflection and renewal as described by worship instructor Robert Webber:  We too easily forget our Maker and Redeemer, replacing God with things and ambition. Lent is the season that...calls us back to God, back to basics, back to the spiritual realities of life. It calls us to put to death the sin and the indifference we have in our hearts toward God and our fellow persons. And it beckons us to enter once again into the joy of the Lord–the joy of a new life born out of a death to the old life.

We are providing two important resources for entering into Lent:
  1. An online Ash Wednesday Worship posted on Noon February 17; featuring: a reflective prayer of our mortality and sorrow over the many lives lost to the coronavirus; Scripture meditation of Moses’ encounter with God in the burning bush; the Lord’s Supper; and an invitation to journey with Jesus to the cross. On our worship page, we will include two special Ash Wednesday spiritual practices that can be done at home as part of the worship service or on their own; the practices deepen the Ash Wednesday experience of repentance and renewed devotion to God.
  2. A Devotional Guide for Lent with a daily reading of Scripture, devotion, and prayer. You may pick up this guide at the Church Library (outside door) from Allie Shoulders on Wednesdays (2/10, 2/17, 2/24) from 1:00-3:00 PM or email Allie or call her at 707-890-8010 to request that one be mailed to your home.
