Interview with Dr. Abid - Prabasi of New England
Join us via Facebook Live on Saturday, February 20th at 6:30 PM EST to watch Dr. Abid's interview with Shanto Ghosh as he recounts HAEFA's history and journey up to its nomination for the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize.
Fires in the Rohingya Camps
On the morning of January 14th, a fire swept through the Nayapara camp of Cox's Bazar, leaving in its aftermath 550 shelters in ruins and 3,500 Rohingya refugees homeless.
The poor living conditions in Cox's Bazar are not only the cause of precarious health conditions for the Rohingya population (including an increased vulnerability to the Covid virus), but also multiply the physical dangers. The increasingly overcrowded camps make it harder for firefighters to navigate the area, and allowed this fire to easily spread, jumping from shelter to shelter. This was also not the first fire to erupt in the camps, with a similar incident taking place in May of 2020 which claimed another 400 shelters. Along with fires, the population of Cox's Bazar routinely has to cope with the natural disasters such as flooding and landslides, whether through the yearly monsoons or natural disasters such as the recent Super Cyclone Amphan.
International Biotech Symposium 2021
The International Biotech Symposium, hosted by the Community of Biotechnology, showcases research progress and new developments in the biological sciences. Dr. Abid, Founder & President of HAEFA, will discuss his research as an honorable guest speaker on February 19th (9AM EST/8PM BST) in his talk "Recent Developments in Subcellular Therapeutics for Cardiovascular Disease".
January 2021 - A Report On Current Activities
  • Rohingya Camps: In January, a total of 3,764 Rohingya and host community patients received free healthcare, medicines, and follow-up. 700 patients were tested for diabetes, 2,111 patients were examined for hypertension, and 8 patients received antenatal care and treatment. 295 children below the age of 5 years received treatment including tests and treatment for malnutrition.
  • A total of 112 patients presented COVID-19-like symptoms, and were treated under home quarantine with three times per week follow up and contact tracing for two weeks by HAEFA. One symptomatic patient required hospitalization with oxygen support at a camp hospital; the patient recovered and went home after 8 days.
  • 15 patients received "presumptive TB" provisional diagnoses, and 10 patients agreed to undergo sputum tests. All tested negative for TB.
  • Cervical Cancer Screening and Treatment Project (Kurigram District) : We are currently collaborating with organizations such as LAMB to screen women in Kurigram District using the “see-and-treat” cervical cancer screening and treatment method for women aged 30-60 years. Throughout our three screening sites (Ulipur, Chilmari, and Nageswari upazilas), HAEFA screened a total of 443 women during the first month of 2021, with 10 results returning positive.
  • COVID-19 Competency TOT training by HAEFA, Brown University CHR&HS, and Project HOPE: 60 new trainers were certified during the December 7th-10th session, increasing the total number of Primary Trainees to 140 since the program began in April 2020. As a result, the total number of Secondary Trainees has risen to 1472
