5 Ways Biden’s “American Rescue Plan” Could Help People With Disabilities

The American Relief Plan is the Biden Administration’s first sample of fully-formed policy since its election campaign. From the looks of it, it may also serve as a first test of its approach to the disability community. The initial signs are promising, though with room for improvement. Of course, a proposal isn’t a law, and legislation that actually passes is rarely the same as what was originally proposed.  Continue Reading...

Sometimes, a child’s emotional intensity is fueled by a parent saying, “you’re overreacting,” “you’re acting like a baby,” or “you’re stretching the truth.” Continue Reading...

The challenges of remote learning have inspired kids who learn and think differently — and their families — to come up with ways to help things run a bit smoother. But these small solutions and successes are more than just quick fixes. They’re signs of resilience.

We asked parents in our Understood community to share their child’s wins. Many of their small solutions had to do with organizing, planning, and managing time. Here’s what they said.  Continue Reading...

NCWD/Youth focuses on young teens and helps them to learn how to cope with their disability and find their place in the workforce. The group also teaches kids to access the education they need. Once the young adults are able to achieve their educational and employment goals, NCWD/Youth works to assist them with living as independently as possible.

The Navigate Life Texas (NLT) website, a project supported by the Texas Health and Human Services (HHS), was created to inform and empower parents of children with disabilities or special health care needs. Healthcare, education, insurance, medical diagnoses, transition to adulthood and how to connect with other parents are among the many topics found on NLT. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) continues to work with the Office of the Governor, Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) and the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to coordinate and plan the state’s response to COVID-19. TEA’s role in these efforts is to help coordinate the flow of information from the state to districts, help districts solve problems, and provide guidance that will aid in districts’ decision-making. TEA does not have the general authority to close schools for matters related to health.
