Closed Hands, Cold Heart
Open Hands, Warm Heart

<<First Name>>,

This is the fifth lesson in our series, Ten Percent: A Call to Biblical Stewardship, that teaches the principles of ten percent giving. We learned that we are called upon to honor God with the first ten percent of all He has given to us in resources, giving these gifts to the Lord through our church.

The message last Sunday, “Practice Over and Above Giving,” described a lifestyle of generosity by giving freely and living openhandedly. Question: Can you recall the names of those who helped lead you to Jesus Christ as your Lord? Think for a moment how much joy it would bring these people to know that you have become a devoted follower of Jesus Christ, living out the biblical principles of stewardship that exemplify faith, faithfulness, and generosity.

2 Corinthians 8 and 9 explain that the apostle Paul was collecting an offering from God’s people. Why? Because the church in Jerusalem was going through a very challenging time. Paul was collecting an offering from the churches to assist the churches where he had been earlier. The church at Corinth had committed support earlier in this process. He had not received the money, so he was leading them to action by giving over and above their normal offering for the purpose of helping others in need in Jerusalem.

In these two chapters there are several principles of biblical generosity introduced. Here is a quick study outline for your use:
  • Sacrificial giving (8:1-5)
  • Reasonable giving (8:12)
  • Proportional giving (8:13-15)
  • Willing giving (9:5)
  • What you sow, you reap giving (9:6)
  • Cheerful giving (9:2)
Consider, the Bible teaches generosity; the world does not. Generosity is a lifestyle that gives freely and lives openhandedly. Randy Alcorn writes “Tithing isn’t the ceiling of giving; it’s the floor. It’s not the finish line of giving; it’s just the starting blocks. Tithes can be the training wheels to launch us into the mind-set, skills, and habits of grace giving.”  Grace giving is over and above generosity being lived out by us. In the text, we learn that Paul had to prompt the Corinthian believers to follow through on their pledge to give, contrasting their hesitancy with the personal initiative demonstrated by the Macedonian believers to give out of the overflow of their joy.

Have you ever wondered why some people have a hard time with giving? It could be because of resentment, fear, selfishness, disobedience, or ignorance. Many think that becoming debt-free is what will bring deliverance from financial bondage. Undoubtedly, it helps, but we also need to realize that financial bondage is a mindset. It is an earthly way of thinking that controls our perspective on money and possessions. Deliverance from financial bondage is a spiritual acknowledgment that everything we have belongs to God, and we are merely stewards over all the possessions God has placed in our hands to use for His glory.

In closing, living generously means you are living openhandedly and giving freely. Generosity is a choice we make each day: Will you live with a godly heart and with open hands?

Worship With Us This Sunday!

Join us for worship this Sunday, February 7, as Pastor Rick concludes our series, "Ten Percent: A Call to Biblical Stewardship," based on the book by Ronnie Floyd, president and CEO of the Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee. You can preview the service plan HERE and download the sermon outline HERE.

Our personal financial security and our church’s financial security are more certain when we follow God’s financial plan as revealed in Scripture. This stewardship focus builds upon biblical financial principles to help you prioritize, elevate, and accelerate generosity.

"Ten Percent: A Call to Biblical Stewardship" focuses on six principles:
  • God is the Owner of Everything (January 3)
  • We Own Absolutely Nothing (January 10)
  • Honor God with at Least the First Ten Percent (January 17)
  • Bring the Full Ten Percent to the Church (January 24)
  • Practice Over and Above Giving (January 31)
  • Focus on the Great Commission Always (February 7)
We hope to see you and your family for Sunday School at 9:30 a.m. and worship at 10:45. We are also continuing to post our services online for those who can't join us in person. The worship service video will be posted no later than Monday to our Facebook page. It will also be available at FreeChurchOnline if you do not have a Facebook account. Be sure to comment and let us know that you're watching with us! If you need any technical assistance, email Josh Erisman.

Super Bowl Sunday Dress Code

The Kansas City Chiefs will play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV this Sunday, February 7. You're invited to show your support by wearing Chiefs apparel/colors (red, yellow, white) and jeans to church that morning. Not a Chiefs fan? Shame, shame. Just kidding! Wear your favorite team's apparel.

Donations for Choices Pregnancy Center

January 17 was Sanctity of Human Life Sunday and we want to bless the Choices Pregnancy Center in Marshfield this month as they minister to moms, dads, and babies in our area.

There are empty baby bottles available at the Information Desk for you to take home and fill with change, bills, or checks (made payable to Choices). We are also collecting diapers and wipes. Place these items in the crib in the central hallway by Sunday, February 14. If you have any questions, talk with Shannon Peelor.

Youth Valentine's Party

All youth (7th-12th grade) are invited to a Valentine's party here at the church on Sunday, February 14 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. There will be painting (wear old clothes), a movie, and dinner. Let Bri or Garett know if you plan to be there!

"Man Up" Men's Banquet

All men are invited to our first-ever "Man Up" Men's Banquet on Saturday, February 20 at 6:00 p.m. Pastor Rick's uncle, Paul Durham, will share his testimony. Paul will also be speaking in our worship service on Sunday, February 21.

The meal is absolutely free and we want you to bring another man with you, whether from our church or elsewhere. Sign up at the Information Desk if you plan to attend. If you have any questions or need more information, talk with Jeff Peelor.

SBC Missionary Highlight

In his years as a missionary, Cole Elbridge (name changed for security) has weathered his share of crises. He has ministered during war, genocide, attempted coups, civil war, political insurrection, terrorist attacks, and to Christians facing persecution. He has stood up to armed bandits, chosen homelessness to minister to the destitute, been evacuated due to rebel activity, and lived through multiple weather disasters. A cancer survivor, he has also survived a meningitis epidemic and found unique ways of ministering during COVID-19.

Prior to his missionary service, Cole told God he’d go anywhere, but asked for assurance that God would be with him. The Lord honored his prayer of trust and so no matter the circumstance, fear is largely absent from Cole’s retelling of the monumental disasters he’s lived through.

THE COOPERATIVE PROGRAM is the financial fuel for reaching every person for Jesus Christ in every town, every city, every state, and every nation. Your support through the Cooperative Program allows missionaries like Cole to not worry about their practical needs even in the midst of uncertainty.

PRAY for the safety of Cole and other missionaries and that the Lord would continue to give them courage to serve in trying times.

In every edition of the FirstUpdate, we are highlighting the efforts of the International Mission Board (IMB), the North American Mission Board (NAMB), the six Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) seminaries, and the various Baptist state conventions. Each month, our church and the other 47,000+ churches in the SBC contribute a portion of our undesignated offerings to these important Cooperative Program (CP) ministries. For more information about CP, click HERE.

Giving Options

Even if you aren't joining us for in-person worship on Sunday, please continue to remember your tithes and offerings. The church’s ministries and operational expenses go on in spite of the current situation. We want to be a blessing to our community and it takes resources to do that. Your faithful giving makes it possible!

In addition to dropping cash or checks in the offering box on Sunday morning, there are multiple ways to give your tithes and offerings:
  • Online through Tithe.ly or the Tithe.ly app
  • Mail a check to First Baptist Church, PO Box 367, Strafford, MO 65757
  • Several of our members have begun using online bill pay through their bank to send in their offering. This is a free service that some banks provide. All you have to do is add the church’s name and address as a vendor, just like you would the electric company or any other business.
  • You can also drop your offering by the church office, but please call ahead to make sure that someone will be in the office.
Thank you again, church family, for your generous and faithful giving! If you need help setting up online giving or have any questions, contact Josh Erisman.
