Hui-tanguru | February 2021

 Kia ora koutou,

Waitangi Day brings a chance for us all to reflect on Aotearoa New Zealand, our history, and what we are all doing to honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Most of us working in the community sector will agree that changes in the way that Māori and Pākehā to share decision-making is both positive and imperative.
It’s good to see government taking some forward steps and actively engaging with Māori issues, including announcements this week about changing the legislation around creating Māori wards at local government level and finalising the Matariki public holiday, starting next year. We hope to see more action on pressing issues that disproportionately affect Māori throughout this term – including incarceration rates, where Māori still make up 52.9% of the prison population; housing, where Māori make up 26% of those living without shelter; and unemployment, where the Māori rate is twice that of the national average. None of these stats will surprise anyone reading this!
We have seen enormous changes, even in the last decade, in the way that New Zealanders are embracing te ao Māori (exemplified by the waitlists on nearly every te reo course!), but as community organisations it is incumbent on us to ensure that we don’t just pay lip service to te ao Māori and te Tiriti, but that we find ways to truly embed kaupapa Māori in the fabric of our organisations. Actively decolonising our institutions — removing the systems and processes built on Pākehā ways of being and doing — will be the linchpin in improving outcomes for Māori communities across all areas.

Obviously this is far easier said than done, and here at CSC we are only scratching the surface of what this means in our own organisation. If you, as our members, have ideas about how we can make changes in this space, we would love to hear from you and welcome the opportunity for ongoing conversations and learning on this topic.

On a completely different note – as the city celebrates 150 years (which nicely lines up with our 50th anniversary), we’ve been enjoying reading bits of City at The Centre: A History of Palmerston North. There are great chapters on tangata whenua, Palmerston North politics, and the city’s many community organisations. We have a copy in the office if you’re interested in having a look.

FROM THE ARCHIVES

In 2021 PNCSC are celebrating 50 years! Throughout the year we will highlight some interesting things from our archives—both from previous editions of Flax and from the minutes of CSC Members' Meetings.

One of the aims of CSC since the very beginning has been connecting the community sector and making sure that community organisations are always 'in the know' about what other services are available in the city — in the past, this has involved printed directories, like these from 1982 and 1988. Today contact information for our members is listed on our website.

PALMERSTON NORTH CITY COUNCIL UPDATE

Kia ora koutou,

Happy New Year! I hope you all had the opportunity for a break and a chance to recharge your batteries. Here’s hoping 2021 is a less challenging year than 2020.

Voting is now open for the vacant place on council left by Tangi’s election to Parliament. Please make sure you complete your papers and post in a DX mailbox, or drop into council as soon as possible (latest midday on 17th February). If you didn’t receive your papers or you’re not enrolled, you can cast a special vote by going into council customer services.
Our focus in council business right now is producing the first draft of the next 10-year plan. There have been many workshops and a lot of work by staff and councillors to get it to this stage. The plan outlines our strategies and vision for the city over the next ten years, and our plans to achieve these aims. The draft will be debated in Committee of Council meeting on 17th February and then it will be over to you for public submissions.

The next Community Development Committee meeting will be on 17th March at 1pm. Please note the change in start time which will continue for all CDC meetings this year. It has been changed to reduce waiting time for those wishing to participate in these committee meetings.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or comments. My email is lorna.johnson@pncc.govt.nz

UPDATE FROM OUR MP

Kia orana,

February is an exciting time in Palmerston North with lots of events and festivities in our city that will help foster connectivity and a real sense of community. The effort behind the scenes is huge, with so many volunteers helping to make our city vibrant. As you will be very much aware, the goodwill of amazing volunteers doesn’t end at celebrations and events, but includes the provision of community services in our city. This month I’d like to offer a big shout out to all the volunteers whose goodwill, energy and effort makes such a positive impact on the lives of everyone in our city

Amitabha Buddhist Centre
Free talk: Choose Happiness

Wednesday 10 February, 7-8.30pm to start our weekly drop in meditation class at Amitabha Buddhist Centre with Birgit Saunders. This free talk is followed by a four week 'learn to meditate' course, called: a Meditation Toolkit on 17, 24 of February and 3, 10 of March.

Have you ever wondered what happiness is and where it comes from? If happiness is a choice then why is it so hard to be and remain happy even for one day? If we train our mind through meditation to become peaceful we will be happy all the time, even in the most difficult conditions. But if our mind is not peaceful, even if we have the best external conditions we will not be happy.

In this talk Birgit will introduce meditation as a way to find true happiness and guide a meditation to help us relax and get in touch with the natural stillness of our mind. Learn how to choose happiness in your life. Everyone welcome! Bring your friends and family; help them deal better with the stress of their daily life.

Cancer Society | Relay For Life 2021
Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back
12pm Sat 27 March to 12pm Sun 28 March

We celebrate our cancer survivors, we remember those we hold in our hearts who have died, and we fight back against cancer through our efforts to prevent cancer and live healthy happy lives.

Team Registration is $100 up to 10 people, and $10 for each additional team member
Riverside Walkway adjacent to Waterloo Park, Hokowhitu, Palmerston North
manawatu.relayforlife.org.nz

Last year the event raised over $370,000 and it is hoped that the $350,000+ mark can be reached again this year. In the 20 years Relay For Life has been held it has raised over $6million for the Cancer Society.

The Cancer Society receives no funding so events such as Relay For Life are vital.  The Cancer Society relies heavily on the generosity of the community to carry out the services it provides. Over the years that Relay For Life has been held it has helped fund a number of projects within the region. All proceeds that are raised help with local service delivery within the Manawatu, Tararua and Horowhenua communities.

Relay For Life is an event that sees cancer survivors, carers and those who have lost loved ones to cancer join in remembrance while raising much needed funds. It is also a time where we raise awareness about fighting back against cancer.

The number of teams entered is almost at capacity. Team members will set up a base on campus and take part in the walk/run relay while enjoying a full programme of entertainment and activities.
Teams begin fundraising and raising awareness of the cause well in advance of the event. Each team, which sets its own fundraising goals, has a team captain who co-ordinates the team, helping them to set and achieve goals.

On the day, teams can begin setting up from 7am with registration starting at 9am. Cancer survivors wanting to take part in the lap of honour can register from 10am and collect their survivor sash.
The relay begins at midday on Saturday with the emotional lap of honour for cancer survivors, which will see around 300 people walking the track together. Following the lap of honour all teams will complete a lap together then the individual laps begin.

At dusk on Saturday evening a candlelight tribute ceremony is held where friends and families light a candle in memory of those they have lost. It’s a moving occasion and made even more poignant when a lone piper plays.

Relay For Life is one of the Cancer Society’s key fundraising and community engagement activities. It’s for people of ages and fitness levels. Anyone can take part!

Relay For Life is a significant annual fundraising event and will celebrate its 21st  anniversary this year.

Community involvement in Relay For Life is across all levels but it is the many volunteers who are the everyday heroes, working behind the scenes and on the day helping make the event run smoothly.
