Broccoli & Candy Canes
On Sunday, Pastor Stacy used the illustration of having broccoli in your teeth to make the point that a friend will tell you the truth for the purpose of kindness. I used the illustration of eating nothing but candy canes all day to make the point that if you care about someone it is OK and even a kindness to sincerely question them about behaviors that seem unhealthy or destructive. Telling the truth or addressing tough topics can sometimes feel uncomfortable and we may fear that it is unkind, but it is actually less kind to remain silent.
Faithful discipleship involves both truth and kindness, rules/ethics and freedom, accountability and compassion, tough love and tender love. As we strive to follow Jesus' example for holding all these tensions in perfect harmony, let's offer each other grace when we lean one way or the other. My prayer for our kids this week is that they will see Jesus in us.
