The weekly newsletter from GPS Training

Welcome to this week's newsletter from GPS Training.

The picture above was taken just above Mungrisdale, lake District, looking South towards Blencathra. A quick 'post-course' evening walk taken last summer, hence the lack of people.

Let's see what is going on in the world of outdoor GPS navigation

Power packs - going off-grid
An in-depth look

With more GPS units coming with built-in batteries many more people are looking at power Packs that can work alongside them when you are 'off-grid'.

It's a fascinating subject, for as little as £29.00 you can have a compact torch, which is also a portable power pack.

This will double your battery life on your GPS unit giving you a further 18 or 36 hours of battery life on your new generation GPS unit.

I have created a video looking at some of the options that are available.

Watch that here.

Top Tip - Garmin
Update the Software in your GPS.

It’s important to clear any user data out of your device before you update unit software to avoid file format clashes.

Firstly, think of your GPS unit as a waterproof computer. That is basically what it is and so it will need to be updated at regular intervals.

Garmin like most manufacturers offers free unit software updates that add new features and improvements to existing features and important fixes for glitches in the system.

Download Garmin Express > go to this page on the Garmin website download the application and run > then follow the on-screen instructions.

Trail rider review
Montana 700 range

Many of the Montana 700 range of GPS units end up on Trail motorbikes as well as being used for the walker and cyclist.

For anybody interested in how the GPS meets the requirements for this purpose I was flagged up an excellent video from one of our customers.

In the video, Greg Villalobos, who makes adventure films on two wheels gives an in-depth review into his experiences and lessons he has learned.

Watch it here.
Which mapping?

Garmin has a number of different map options, but what are the differences between Ordnance survey 1:25k, 1:50k, and Topo Active maps?

In this video, we look at the main differences.

Viewing screen in Bright Sunlight

When using your GPS in bright sunlight with the sun reflecting on the screen you do sometimes need to adjust the settings in the unit to get the best out of the screen as follows:-

1. Press the Back-light Boost button (above the power button) for short burst of maximum back-light
2. You can fit an Anti Glare Screen Protector directly to the HR Screen and use without the Supplied Plastic Screen Protector.
3. Activate Sun Filter from the Settings Menu - Backlight - Top Left button toggles between: Normal, Sun Filter & Red Filter

And Finally ............
