Fortnightly Dispatch No. 04

This is Scott Anderson, and this is the Fortnightly Dispatch, where I share what’s catching my attention and highlight a few personal + family notes and photos from the past two weeks.

This newsletter, and the Notes & Photos blog, is meant to replace social media (for me), as I delete and wean off those channels and instead share with people in a more thoughtful way (ideally, with people I actually know and like).

Laguna Beach | Sunset

While I don’t know much about the French philosopher & journalist Albert Camus, this snippet shared by Brad Feld on his personal blog is worth a ponder:

Find meaning. Distinguish melancholy from sadness. Go out for a walk. It doesn’t have to be a romantic walk in the park, spring at its most spectacular moment, flowers and smells and outstanding poetical imagery smoothly transferring you into another world. It doesn’t have to be a walk during which you’ll have multiple life epiphanies and discover meanings no other brain ever managed to encounter. ~ Albert Camus, Notebooks 1951-1959

This is mesmerizing. So good, in so many ways. Reminds me of childhood days frolicking around the pond at Beverly each April, as the tadpoles would start appearing.

The Case for Sweatpants — A timely podcast, as many of us work from home offices (or a nook under the staircase in my case) in these pandemic times. “In this episode of the new podcast The Experiment, Mull and the host, Julia Longoria, trace sweatpants through U.S. history and debate an age-old question: Do they symbolize laziness, or freedom?” Click HERE to have a listen.

I found this a good use of 26 minutes…especially around the 23 minute mark as Davis talks about the hard stuff that bring reward and meaning.

Some nuggets in this edited version of a talk from Emma Cragg on the what + why + how of reflective routines.

This is cool…really cool. Museum Alive is an app narrated by David Attenborough that puts prehistoric creatures on your literal desktop. “Follow a fearsome sabre-toothed tiger as he stalks his prey, soar around the room with a flying dinosaur, and discover one of the strangest sea creatures from over 500 million years ago.”

DisneyWorld — Plans are coming together for our family trip to DisneyWorld in April to celebrate Gia’s birthday. Receiving our “MagicBands” makes it feel a bit more real.

Ella, Ethan & Kai have been making frequent trips to the Korean grocery store. As a result, here’s Ella’s latest homemade lunch (with props to Grandma Patty for the cool bento-style lunch trays).

Harbor Point Date Night — Gia and I have been honored to serve alongside some amazing couples as part of the Marriage Ministry at Harbor Point. Most recently we hosted an outdoor movie date night, complete with games and prizes. The most coveted of these prizes was the VIP set-up for one lucky couple (in true pandemic style).
