Federal public transit investments announced

UTTRI associated faculty comment on the February 10 Government of Canada announcement of $14.9 billion for public transit projects over the next eight years, including permanent funding of $3 billion per year for Canadian communities beginning in 2026-27.

El-Diraby: Let us learn from COVID

The article discusses El-Diraby’s research project “Best Practices for Industry-wide Collective Action to Manage Pandemics in the Ontario Construction Sector,” conducted by the University of Toronto in collaboration with leading industry associations.

The project's aim is to develop best practices for the construction sector on how to better manage and deal with future pandemics.

Robinson re-appointed as presidential advisor on the environment, climate change and sustainability

head shot of Dr. John RobinsonUTTRI associated faculty Professor John B. Robinson has been re-appointed presidential advisor on the environment, climate change and sustainability, a role he first accepted in 2017 for a three-year term.

Robinson's deep commitment to sustainability research and practice is long-standing.

He is currently a professor at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy and the School of the Environment. His research focuses on the intersection of climate change mitigation, adaptation, and sustainability; the use of visualization, modeling, and citizen engagement to explore sustainable futures; sustainable buildings and urban design; creating partnerships for sustainability with non-academic partners; and, generally, the intersection of sustainability, social, and technological change, behaviour change, and community engagement processes.

Daniel Olejarz, Transportation Planner at IBI Group and graduate of U of T’s MASc program, presented “AI in Transportation – Industry Trends and Opportunities” on February 5, 2021.

Through data and machine learning, people can train AI to perform tasks in the transportation industry. However, AI is only as good as the data powering the learning process.
