College Receives Grant For
Veteran Student Assistance
Moreno Valley College was one of 16 institutions nationally to receive a US Department of Education Centers of Excellence grant to assist Veteran students. The two-year $450,000 grant will allow the College to increase support services in the Veterans Resource Center by coordinating services to address the academic, financial, physical, and social needs of Veteran students.
Currently, the Veterans Resource Center has a staff of one and one-half individuals. During the 2018-19 academic year, the College enrolled 15,197 students, of which 791 were Veterans. Of the 791 Veterans, 63 percent were Hispanic and 12 percent were African American.

Rawlings Named Dean of Public Safety Education and Training
Phillip Rawlings has been hired as Moreno Valley College’s dean of Public Safety Education and Training. He replaces Art Turnier who retired last month.
“I am proud to have been selected as the dean of Instruction for the College’s School of Public Safety,” Rawlings said. “It is an honor to continue the mission of mentoring, educating and training the future generation of public service personnel. Now, more than ever, we need men and women to look to a career in public service and become leaders of tomorrow’s public safety system.”

Students Honored, Briggs Receives Legacy Award at Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Event
Moreno Valley College’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship event was held on January 20. This year, due to COVID restrictions, the event has moved to a virtual format. Three MVC students and four local high school students were honored with scholarships. The college students competed in a speech competition and the high school students were selected based on through an essay competition. This year’s theme is The Winds of Change: Addressing Opportunity Gaps.
In addition, Cordell Briggs, Ph.D., English, who retired after 29-plus years with the District, delivered the keynote speech and was honored with the College’s MLK Legacy Award. He joined a long list of distinguished community members who have been honored with the MLK Legacy Award.

College Completes Successful Reorganization of Academic Affairs, Student Services
Moreno Valley College’s Academic Affairs and Student Services divisions have successfully completed the reorganization of their areas.
The divisions considered the following as they reworked their areas:
- Guided Pathways
- Program and discipline coherence
- Size of each program/discipline (enrollment, personnel, FTES, and number of sections, for instance.)
- Balance of responsibilities across each of the deans

Students Overcome Obstacles, Attend Annual UCR Research Challenge Virtually
The STEM Engagement Center had 11 students accepted to participate in the three-week Sequence 2 Success DNA Barcoding Research Challenge hosted by the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences at UCR. Ten of the 11 students participating are women. The event brings together college students for what had been a hands-on laboratory experience at the university. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the experience was held virtually. The program is primarily offered to community college students looking to transfer into a four-year institution. Participation is free. This was the eighth year UCR hosted the sequencing event.
Students analyzed tuna, salmon, swordfish, seabass and white tuna DNA. Teams worked within their community college and then presented their work during an online symposium, which included a formal abstract and a PowerPoint presentation.

College Launches Common Ground Website
Moreno Valley College launched a Common Ground website as part of the College’s call to action effort against racism. The website urges both the external and internal communities to examine and actively work to dismantle beliefs and structures that foster environments of racism and inequity. The goal is to listen and support students, employees and the Valley’s communities of color through anti-racism practices, open discussion and culturally relevant education.
The first step is understanding anti-racism and acknowledge that racist beliefs and structures exist and then actively doing the work needed to dismantle those beliefs and structures. The College’s learning communities will work to increase the number of educationally underrepresented students and diligently work to ensure completion of studies. Leadership is also committed to offering courses with culturally relevant topics to program-run support services, leading to greater opportunities for a culturally enriching education.

Welcome Center on Track
Moreno Valley College’s new Welcome Center, a $14 million single-story building that will house enrollment services and other student services divisions, remains on track and is scheduled for completion in August. The Welcome Center is next to Student Activities and behind the Science and Technology Building. When completed, the Welcome Center will join Student Academic Services, the Dental Education Center, and the Network Operations Center as buildings completed under the District's 2004 Measure C bond measure that was approved by voters in order to finance new construction and remodels across the District to accommodate the growing number of students the colleges are serving.

District Releases Annual Report
Riverside Community College District has released its 2019-20 Annual Report. Completed each winter, following the close of the academic year, the report highlights and showcases the District and its colleges’ top stories from the academic year. The annual report also summarizes financial achievements for the District as well as the Foundation.
