Wales DTP Re-introduction Event
|
|
This month, Wales DTP students took part in a ‘Reintroduction’ event aimed at connecting students across pathways and institutions. The event used the Wales DTP Students Team space, which contains four new channels to enable focused discussions around: Research; informal networking; anonymous feedback and help & guidance. Students took part in several asynchronous activities with a new activity added daily. High levels of engagement meant that new connections were made each day, and we look forward to building on those links with monthly live networking events.

International Womens Day: Talking with Pictures
|
|
|
The Migration, Ethnicity, Race and Diversity (MEAD) Research Group is running an event in celebration of International Womens Day, which takes place on 8 March. The event, 'Talking in Pictures', is a virtual display of images of working with or researching women, or being a woman in research, and provides an intersectional illustration of female lived experiences during a global pandemic. Images will be tweeted throughout the day with the hashtag #IWD2021. For further details see the call for submission. CLOSER’s Learning Hub was refreshed with new content in October 2020 and is aimed at researchers new to the field of longitudinal research, as well as university module leaders and tutors. Learning modules on the platform cover topics including Study Design, Analysing Longitudinal Data, Data Harmonisation, and Research Communication. Seven detailed research case studies on the Learning Hub also demonstrate how data from longitudinal population studies can be used to answer research questions and create impact. CLOSER is continually seeking to develop this resource to meet the needs of its users: contact the CLOSER team if you have any feedback on how the Learning Hub could be improved.

Disinformation, Language and Identity

The call for papers for the Disinformation, Language and Identity workshop is now open. This online interdisciplinary event takes place on 30 April, exploring synergies between different approaches to disinformation research to help answer questions such as: How are dominant narratives of disinformation constructed online? How does fake news circulate across different communities online? How can quantitative methods be used to understand the spread of disinformation? How can qualitative methods be used to understand the construction and spread of disinformation narratives across communities? Abstracts are welcome from a range of disciplines including applied linguistics, computer science, sociology, and psychology, and should be submitted, in Word format, to Wales DTP student Aurora Goodwin by 15 March.

We are pleased to announce the recent appointment of Rosie Watts (Human Geography) and Aimee Morse (Environmental Planning), as Wales DTP Student Reps for Swansea University and the University of Gloucestershire respectively. Rosie and Aimee will work alongside current Rep Rachel Phillips (Journalism & Democracy, Cardiff University) acting as a conduit for comments and ideas from ESRC funded students across the academic schools and pathways in their home institution.
If you would like to be considered for the role of Student Rep for Aberystwyth University, Bangor University, Cardiff Metropolitan University or Cardiff University, submit your statement of interest to the Wales DTP, along with the names of two fellow ESRC students who support your nomination, by 4pm on 19 March.

Welsh Government Internships
|

|
The Wales DTP is pleased to offer eight internship opportunities with the Welsh Government. These are open to any ESRC Wales DTP funded student (except those within 3 months of the start or end of their studentship). It is anticipated that the internships will be conducted remotely, commencing in spring 2021, for a period of between 3 to 6 months full-time or the part-time equivalent. Successful applicants will get an extension of between 3 and 6 months to their PhD (equivalent to the duration of the internship).
These internships will offer opportunities to create impact by contributing to the work of government, the chance to build relationships outside of academia, as well the ability to develop research skills in a policy environment. The closing date for applications is noon on 1 March. Full project descriptions and details on how to apply are available on the Wales DTP website.

Administrative Data Research UK
|

|
Administrative Data Research (ADR) UK has produced the first of three explainer videos, What is administrative data and why is it so useful for research? which may be interest to those who haven't heard of administrative data, or want to know why it's a valuable tool to support research and policymaking in the public interest. In addition to explaining what administrative data is and its role in research, this video also covers the safeguards ADR UK partners have in place to ensure the data they source and curate is used safely and ethically. This may be a helpful starting point for researchers carrying out public engagement for a project making use of administrative data.

Mental Health Research Incubator
|
|
|
The Mental Health Research Incubator website has recently been launched for students and researchers in careers in mental health research. It is one of a series of incubators established by the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) to build research capacity in priority areas. It aims to promote career development in mental health research by sharing practical advice, connections and career development opportunities for aspiring and active researchers in mental health.
