Volume 1 - January 2021
Hi Subscribers,

A new year brings new possibilities, new opportunities, new goals, and a stronger sense of direction. 2020 was a hard year for the reserve, with our lodges being severely impacted thus creating a snowball effect down to the management perspective of the reserve. However, we pick up the pieces and we get stronger and wiser the more we overcome.

We are hoping for a more successful year and one which sees new partnerships being created and established. Together we are stronger.

With this in mind, we have exciting news to be released soon! So be sure to stay plugged in to our social media platforms to be the first to know!

Ecological Matters

Snare removal
On the 24th of December, a snare around the neck of a lioness was removed. Our Timbavati team immediately contacted Wild Scapes Veterinary Services to come out and assist. Luckily the snare had not yet cut into her skin, making it an easy and uncomplicated removal (besides for the other 3 lionesses nearby!)

A BIG thank you to Down to the Wire for covering the costs for the entire ordeal! One less snared animal to worry about! Go and check out their website to see more of their amazing work that they do.

Cyclone Eloisé

We were all given a fair warning for big rains in January with Cyclose Elosé moving through the Mozambique channel. We were not too sure what to expect. We asked whether we should brace ourselves for floods like in 2012? Build a boat? Load then animals two by two?
Thankfully Cyclone Eloisé was kind to us and gave us wonderful soaking rain and beautiful cloud displays. A total of just over 72mm of rain was received at the headquarters.

Security Matters

GKEPF Air Operations
Nothing quite like having eyes in the sky! The Timbavati would like to extend its thanks to Mr. Tom Hancock and Chris & Thomas Watkins (WL Hancock Trust) for donating the use of their Robinson 66 helicopter for the Greater Kruger Environmental Protection Foundation (GKEPF) to make use of. This operation is too supported by Tsitsikamma Spring Water who contribute to GKEPF with every bottle of water sold.

Our Timbavati field rangers were given a life-changing experience by allowing them to participate in an aerial patrol over our beautiful reserve. An experience I am sure they will never forget!

Having extra eyes in the sky means there is another layer of protection for our precious wildlife.
Our Fundraising Campaigns:
Our campaigns are still active and making a huge contribution to our operations on the ground. Any humble donation towards our campaigns will not only support our dedicated field rangers but also help them to be fighting fit to protect our wildlife.

A big thank you to everyone who has donated thus far. You can see from our newsletters that we are making every cent count.

Your generous donations make the difference!
Featured Campaign:
Avoca Gate Upgrade:
Over the past few months, the Timbavati, thanks to various donations received, has invested a huge amount of time and effort into upgrading the Avoca Gate.

Our goal is to raise between R 80 000 and R 100 000 for the purchase and implementation of smart technology, as part of the Avoca Gate Security upgrade.

Do you think you can help us?

Campaign Status:
Giving Greens

We are jumping right back into building the internal structure of the field rangers netted garden which was donated by the Global Conservation Corps last year. This project not only has an excellent environmental footprint but also ensures that our rhino protectors (field rangers) get a balanced and healthy diet to support their long hard hours of physical work.

By donating to Giving Greens, you can assist in supporting the overall health of our Field Rangers who work tirelessly to keep our wildlife protected. Click the support and donate button to read more about this campaign

In order for us to continue with our great work, we looking for support in purchasing a portable projector. This projector will be not only used to extend our environmental education reach but to also educate our communities on a variety of other topics. One of our exciting upcoming projects is our women's centre at Nourish which would too greatly benefit from having this device.
Let us know if you can help?

What’s better than a safari summer experience?

Every year in the Greater Kruger, in December, the bushveld of South Africa begins a magical transformation. The storm clouds gather, and the thirsty veld opens up to the new rainfall. Within a matter of weeks, the dry and hot landscape is painted with hundreds of shades of green; new flowers burst from the ground; the colourful migrant birds arrive from the north; the herds gather on the plains to feed, and the tiny young impala drop from their mothers as they begin their new life in the wilderness. This is the green season in full force, a season you just don’t want to miss in the Greater Kruger!

The new year ahead may appear maybe a bit daunting, or even exciting to some, however, remember to think of the happiness in any dark time or situation that you may be faced with in this coming year. Hear the call of this gorgeous black-bellied korhaan who reminds us to sing and give praise for each new day.

This quote resonates with all that we build our reserve upon. We strongly believe in the inclusiveness of our neighbours and having them involved and connected to the wildlife economy.

By creating the connection at a young age, we not only ensure that the seed of conservation is planted but that the young learner has a change in mindset to protect our natural environment that one day he/ she may benefit from.
Did you know, every time you visit the Timbavati you give back to our conservation and community projects?
We are able to contribute 10% of our revenue through to The Timbavati Foundation who delivers high-quality environmental education through its programs.

We hope you can take this quote into your daily life and help build a better community..
