Newsletter February 2021

Dear EWM-NL members,

There are quite a few topics in this newsletter. I hope that my efforts to somewhat organise them make the newsletter readable and useful to you. We are facing (still) difficult times. The lockdown demands lots from each one of us, be it students or faculty, in academia or outside academia, with or without children. We all face individual challenges that typically cover not only our professional environment but also our personal and social lives.

The message from the EWM-NL board is simple: reach out. It helps.

We have the mentoring programme (that had quite a few new registrations lately). Reach out. Talking to your peers will offer a new perspective at least, which is always valuable even if you feel that things are going reasonably well. The 2021 EWM-NL theme is "Community Spirit". We felt that as the lockdown has limited our professional and social contact, finding ways to reach out in these challenging times should be the top priority of our community this year. We hope that through our events and projects we will fulfil in some small part this goal.

Chin up and stay safe!

Cheers,
Maria Vlasiou

Joint CWM – EWM meeting
In March 2021, the IMU Committee for Women in Mathematics and the European Women in Mathematics association organise a meeting, open to the public, on the Gender Gap in Science Project. In the meeting, Colette Guillopé (French Association Women & Science, Honour President), Helena Mihaljević (Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Berlin), Marie-Françoise Roy (Chair of the International Mathematical Union Committee for Women in Mathematics), and Susan White (American Institute of Physics) will present various chapters from the final report of the project.

Please mark Tuesday, 16 March 2021, 16:00-18:00 CET in your calendar.

The project is a multidisciplinary project in which eleven organisations contributed to the analysis of the gender gap in science from three complementary perspectives:
  • The Global Survey of Scientists addresses issues related to the absence of role models, feelings of exclusion, harassment, low participation, and retention rates.
  • The Study of Publication Patterns provides insights on the proportion of women as research authors or the presence of women publishing in top scientific journals.
  • The Database of Good Practices introduces a conceptual framework to analyse good practices, in order to provide evidence of effectiveness and impact.

Further information about the project can be found at https://gender-gap-in-science.org/.

Participation is online and free of charge. The language of the event will be English. Information on how to join the event will follow and registration will open soon.

As our address book is by no means exhaustive, we would be very grateful if you could inform your network about the event.

We are looking forward to seeing you at the public CWM-EWM meeting!

Sincerely, on behalf of CWM and EWM, the organising committee,

One World Probability Seminar
Started last spring in response to the Covid-19 epidemic, the OWP seminar seeks to present top level speakers from around the world to a broad international audience of probabilists. It takes place each Thursday on Zoom and is simultaneously live streamed on YouTube (check the website to see the time in your local time zone). The weekly format is typically two talks on the same or related subjects, aimed at a broad audience. The first talk is usually a background talk, while the second highlights more contemporary research developments.

You can find the details of the upcoming seminars, videos and slides of past- seminars, and instructions on how to subscribe to the OWPS mailing list on the OWPS website.

The weekly seminars are announced to the mailing list the day before.

We look forward to your participation in the seminar series this spring.

EWM-NL is looking for volunteers

#1
You may have noticed that lately our website is a mess. We lost its contents due to a virus at the server (which is also the reason why we could not use our update). We need help with updating all contents. Technical support for updating the design exists. If this is a task that you think you might find fun to do for a few hours, please email us at info@ewmnetherlands.nl.

#2
This year, we hope to organise a few events to help with community building. One will be targeted to female mathematics students, discussing why a PhD in mathematics may be an interesting option. Another is targeted to women at or after their PhD in mathematics, discussing career perspectives. You have seen our Wikipedia project passing by and we hope to expand it by engaging students to contribute. In the spirit of the theme of this year, we are looking for a volunteer to organise an online "pub quiz" gathering for EWM-NL members. As above, if this is a task that you think you might find fun to do for a few hours, please email us at info@ewmnetherlands.nl.

Contribute to "Maths in <200 characters"

You may have seen at our social media, in addition to the closing of our last few newsletters, that we post quotes of women scientists in the country, all answering the question of what drove them to science or what they like more about their discipline in 200 characters or less. (This was material that we had collected for a campaign of Elsevier Weekblad, which got tabled and for which we got new permissions to use.)

Share with us what inspired you to go into maths by emailing us your photo and quote (<200 characters!) at info@ewmnetherlands.nl

ICM 2022 grants

From now on, people can register to participate in the International Congress of Mathematicians 2022 in Saint Petersbourg and can apply for the Kovalevskaya and the  Chebyshev grants. Please visit icm2022.org.

The Kovalevskaya programme provides local support for up to 1000 early career participants from the developed countries as defined by the IMU. Chebyshev grants will provide full support (airfare and local expenses) in St Petersburg, to 1000 participants from the developing countries.

In order to apply for a grant, one has to register on the ICM website first and then apply on MathPrograms.org.  The information about grants with all relevant links is available here: icm2022.org/grants. If you want to participate to the Second World Meeting for Women in Mathematics (WM)², please indicate it when you register. The meeting will bring together mathematicians from all over the world to think about gender issues in mathematics, its challenges, initiatives, and perspectives for the future.

Ik houd ervan aan een probleem te sleutelen tot de oplossing zich ineens in wonderlijke helderheid aandient. Maar werk kiezen was mij te moeilijk, ik heb enkel steeds gedaan waar ik van houd.
