The Week That Was: Back in the Pod Life Again

EPJ! Maybe Sunday! The Accidentals! 1997!

Mon. Feb. 1 - Our return to "normal" podcasting began with discussing some of the most memorable Phil Spector productions we could recall.

Tue. Feb. 2 - On Tuesday, it was EPJ and his troupe of merrymakers ringing up the Suburban Party Line. It started as a 2020 wrap-up, but like always, it was so much more.

Wed. Feb. 3 - Patron Mike Kohli was kind enough to invite New York State rockers Maybe Sunday to the show. Now we've all been hooked.

Thur. Feb. 4 - Keith Jacobsen helped make Thursday the second half of a fantastic interview double header. He set us up with Michigan musicians The Accidentals. And yep, now we're all hooked.

Fri. Feb. 5 - To wrap up the week, Patron Steven Routledge dove into four incredible albums released in the year 1997. That's the kind of Friday episode we love.

Super Bowl Special
SUPER BOWL SQUARES, SUBURBS POD STYLE

Hey, music lovers!

Patrick and Mike have cooked up a Tampa Bay-Kansas City music-themed way to play Super Bowl squares for the big game. It doesn't cost you anything and there will be some prizes for the winners whose squares match the scores at the end of each of the first three quarters and the final score.

Here's how to play:
Download the Musical Super Bowl Squares sheet from SuburbsPod.com. Next, identify 5-10 songs/squares in the order you want them. We will give out the spots based on first come-first served. However, we may wait to see how many total people participate so we know how many to allot per player. (For instance, if 20 people play, everyone gets five squares.)

Once we get everyone's picks, we will process them. Then, we will do a random drawing to put the numbers (0-9) in the right spots on each axis of the grid.

A finished version with your initials on the proper squares will be created and available for download as soon as possible (before the game, of course). Please submit your choices by 3pm ET, Saturday, February 6.

Send your entries to snidermike@verizon.net

LISTENER OF THE WEEK: DAVID LEEDY

Somewhere there's a smile with my name on it!

I live in … Kenosha WI.

I work as … a supply chain manager for a company that makes cleaning products (including disinfectant wipes).

I discovered "Rockin' the Suburbs” … right after Chris Cornell passed away. I came across your episode discussing the Singles soundtrack. I've been a listener every day since!

My favorite episodes are … the "new music" episodes, as they have lead to some new faves and an expanding Bandcamp wishlist. The Who and Prince countdowns were a lot of fun too.

My favorite artists are … The Replacements, New Order, The Cure, R.E.M., Rush, Umphrey's McGee, Widespread Panic, Grateful Dead.

The most prized record in my collection is … Neil Young's Time Fades Away with the original poster. I found it at an antique store.

The first records I ever bought were … Rush’s Permanent Waves (vinyl), Van Halen’s Women And Children First (8-track), The Who’s Who's Next (cassette), Echo and the Bunnymen’s Songs To Learn and Sing (CD), Arcade Fire EP (MP3).

The last record I bought was … Long In the Tooth by the Budos Band (vinyl), J.T. by Steve Earle and The Dukes (Bandcamp download).

The first concert I saw was … Huey Lewis & The News on the Sports tour.

The best concert I ever saw was … Umphrey's McGee, July 25, 2014. The week leading up to this show was filled with emotion.   I received great news at my six-month kidney cancer check up.  That high was was followed by the low of hearing the company I worked for was relocating. Due to family commitments, I would be turning down the offer to move. My mind was racing with all of these events. Driving home from work on a gorgeous summer Friday, I decided I needed live music. So I drove to Ravinia, an outdoor park outside of Chicago and roughly an hour away, snagged a sixth-row ticket, and got to my seat just as UM started to play. They did an acoustic section toward the end of the first set that was simply mesmerizing. Any worries I had faded away as they played "Great American>Susanah>Great American".  After that they plugged back in and did a cover of Toto's “Africa," which was a fun way to close out the set.

My favorite song is … “This Must Be The Place (Naïve Melody)” by Talking Heads.

My favorite song lyric is … "Somewhere there's a smile with my name on it.”

I am drinking … Founders KBS Mackinac Island Fudge stout.

My favorite basketball teams are … Go Milwaukee Bucks! Go Purdue Boilermakers (sorry, not sorry Jim)!

My philosophy of life is … to paraphrase Warren Zevon, "Enjoy Every Sandwich.”

 PLAYLIST OF THE WEEK >>>

If you listened to Friday's episode of the show, you heard the inimitable Steven Routledge lead us through a personal tour of the music of 1997. (If you haven't, go listen to it right now.)

Below you will find a playlist curated by Steven, which hits the highs of '97. Turn it on, crank it up, close your eyes and dream of an amazing CD wallet filled with all these ridiculously good songs. Thanks SR!

What We're Listening To:

Jim: The Clash - Sandinista!
Mary: Yukon Blonde - "Good Times"
Matt: Arlo Parks - Collapsed in Sunbeams
Patrick: Pearl Charles - Magic Mirror
Sam: Jets to Brazil - Orange Rhyming Dictionary
Sami: Nasty Cherry - "Lucky"

Friday New Releases: Time for New Records!

Have you spent all your holiday gift cards yet?

Foo Fighters - Medicine at Midnight (RCA)
The Foos step outside their arena rock comfort zone to explore new pop sounds. Dave Grohl has called this their David Bowie Let’s Dance album, and if memory serves, that album did all right for him.

Aaron Lee Tasjan - Tasjan! Tasjan! Tasjan! (New West)
In a similarly eclectic vein is this up-and-coming rocker. He’s well-grounded in Americana and power pop, a student of the sounds of joy, while continuing his pursuit of higher musical ground.
