We wanted to send you an update in regards to our events this week. Please join us tomorrow, Tuesday, February 9th for our monthly membership meeting. This event will include our Fireside Chat with three phenomenal women who have trailblazed their way through the field of STEM (see bios below), as well as updates for Play Like A Girl. 

NOTE: We will NOT have our YP Connect (happy hour) event this month but we will be picking it back up in March.

  • Dr. Charner L. Rodgers, Ph.D. - Associate Professor - Robert R. Taylor School of Architecture and Construction Science and Management Tuskegee University. Dr. Charner L. Rodgers is a native of Nashville, Tn, and has worked in the STEM industry for over 20 years. Over the years, Rodgers has worked as a civil engineer, general contractor, speaker, and research analyst. She currently is an Associate Professor / Senior Program Coordinator for Industry Relation at Robert R. Taylor School of Architecture and Construction Science at Tuskegee University. She resides in Atlanta, Georgia with her Daughters, Taylor and Parke. 

  • Dr. Ekemini I. Orok, MD, MHS  - Obstetrics & Gynecology, Nashville General Hospital. Ekemini I. Orok, MD, MHS a passionate resident physician in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Meharry Medical College. She brings forth spirits of discipline, confidence, and commitment. She strives to exemplify servitude, accountability, and integrity. Over the many years, she has served as a role model for diverse girls and women. As a native of Southwest Georgia, Dr. Orok’s desire and professional goal to become a physician began at an early age. Her goals set her on a trajectory including participating in many nationally coveted programs, including holding leadership positions with Jack and Jill of America, Inc, and various premedical programs including spending time at Georgetown University. She earned her high school diploma early and entered Spelman College as a sophomore. Moreover, while matriculating at Spelman, Dr. Orok was dually enrolled at Boston University in the Early Medical School Selection Program. Seeking further advancement and exploration of knowledge and skills, Dr. Orok performed a fellowship with the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, GA wherein she worked on projects requiring a national security clearance performing work with vaccines. Also while attending Spelman, Dr. Orok became the recipient of several key scholarships and awards, including the United States Department of Energy Scholarship Award, Coca Cola Scholarship, and earning 1st place in her category in Spelman College’s Research Day. She graduated from Spelman not only with honors but also with a wealth of experiences and determination. Directly after completing undergrad, Dr. Orok entered Meharry Medical College where she received her Masters of Health Science and Doctorate of Medicine degrees with accolades and honors. While pursuing her graduate and professional degrees, Dr. Orok conducted research at the Vanderbilt Ingram Cancer Center, studying the administration of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. She also served as a student leader within many organizations including holding the position of president of Meharry’s American Medical Association. As a resident, Dr. Orok is passionate about serving underserved populations. She cares for each of her patients in an individualized and special way. She is particularly committed to reducing morbidity and mortality among women of color in pregnancy and the postpartum period. She also has interests in cancer research. Dr. Orok is a member of the Hendersonville Area Chapter of The Links Inc., and passionately performs community service activities related to health care and addressing issues of health disparities. She enjoys traveling, experiencing ethnic cuisine, enjoying concerts, and writing poetry. 

  • Dr. Brittany Ann Allison, Ph.D. - Assistant Director of Undergraduate Research and National Fellowships - Carnegie Mellon University. Brittany Allison, Ph.D. is the Assistant Director of Undergraduate Research and National Fellowships at Carnegie Mellon University. She holds a Ph.D. in chemistry from Vanderbilt University, where she conducted experimental and computational chemistry/biochemistry research to study protein-ligand interfaces. She received the prestigious National Science Foundation – Graduate Research Fellowship as a graduate student. After her Ph.D., Brittany remained at Vanderbilt to support undergraduate students in all disciplines engaged in research on campus, and advise them in writing strong research statements. She joined the Undergraduate Research Office and Fellowships and Scholarships Office at Carnegie Mellon in 2018. In this role, Brittany implements strategies to attract a diverse and inclusive pool of students to research and fellowship opportunities, maintains partnerships across campus to support students engaged in these opportunities, mentors research students, reviews and provides feedback for application materials, plans research showcase events, advises students as they apply for prestigious fellowships, and much more. Brittany is motivated to connect students with meaningful and impactful opportunities, and also teach students to write captivatingly about their experiences and goals.
