NEW LIVING WAGE

Effective January 1, 2021, we’ve announced a new annually adjusted living wage of $15.40 an hour, or $13.90 an hour for living wage employers who provide at least half an employee’s health insurance coverage. We’re grateful to our 223 living wage employers, old and new, for committing to paying a living wage even during these economically turbulent times.

NEW CERTIFICATIONS

Since our last newsletter, we’re thrilled to announce that several employers have stepped up and committed to paying the new living wage of $15.40. They are:

INTRODUCING ANNIE BURTON

We're thrilled to announce that Annie Burton is joining our Board of Directors. Annie’s a great addition to our board: not only does she have extensive experience working in the nonprofit sector, she’s a living wage employer herself. We called her up to ask her about herself.

Tell us about yourself.

"I'm driven to help others that have been marginalized because I grew up thinking I’d become a statistic. I grew up in Boston in one of the poorest housing communities in the country, and there weren’t many who found opportunities to make it out. Thanks to teachers, nonprofits, and my nurturing southern parents, I got opportunities that changed my life. I pursued my undergraduate studies in business management and economics at Harvard University, and I’ve spent most of my career working to help others who came from backgrounds like mine. Now, I’m an avid volunteer, always serving others and involving myself with board work. I’m a loving mother to two boys, and I’m encouraging them to get involved and volunteer — it feels good when they recognize the value of volunteering and serving others."

Why do you believe living wages are important?

"I came from an environment where people didn’t make living wages, so I know firsthand. Living wages are about fairness and human decency — bottom line, right thing to do. Plus, people working with decent wages get spending power, which helps our economy."

What do you hope to achieve as a board member of OCLW?

"I hope to apply my experiences and expertise from working with nonprofits — I’m a proud member of the Hillsborough Chamber of Commerce, Hillsborough Kiwanis Club, Durham Chapter of the Links, Incorporated, and the Orange County Living Wage Board. I also hope to help get more businesses on board and show them what we can do for employees."

LOCAL NEWS

We’re also thankful for local news outlets, who have helped us get the word out about living wages. A few weeks ago, INDY Week published “Orange County's Cost of Living Continues to Rise as COVID Affects Local Business." The challenges and rewards of being a living wage employer during the pandemic come through loud and clear. Read the whole article here.
  • “[Paying a living wage is] entirely stressful, and we worry about it every day, and I lose sleep, and I’ve gotten a couple of ulcers … During a pandemic when everyone’s revenue is slashed at least 50 percent, and sometimes more, it’s a real mission. You gotta dig in and figure it out, and we’re pulling out all the stops to make it happen.” - Scott Conary, owner of Open Eye Café and Carrboro Coffee Roasters.
  • “I really want my employees to know that I care about them as people. I care about their future and their health, and I...make that personal sacrifice for my own income and make sure that they are good.” - Shaina Holman, Holman Family Dental Care.
  • “Our mission is devoted to living wages...rent continues to go up, other expenses continue to go up, inflation goes up. In a way, it’s more important than ever that we come out with a new living wage.” - Susan Romaine, chair of OCLW.

Last December, The Local Reporter published “Working to Make Wages Livable,” highlighting our mission and featuring some of our living wage employers. Check out the full article here.

  • "Since OC Living Wage was founded in 2015, [OCLW] has certified 223 local employers … It has even had 16 new employers joining the roster since the pandemic began in March.”

  • "Living wage helps the whole community, not just the individual.” - Margaret Pender, Owner of Victoria Park Florist.
