This week's 'Thought for St James'

"Our Father in Heaven, hallowed be your name" - Matthew 6:9

At our youth meetings this term we are looking at the Lord's prayer. These might be very familiar words to us and therefore may have lost some their impact.

But even as we look at the first line we are immediately introduced to something amazing. We get to call God Most High, the same name that Jesus uses: "Father". The one who rules the cosmos is our father.

Before we can offer any truly heart-felt prayers, Jesus urges us before we pray anything else to remember who we are praying to and where we have been brought into.

Not because I'm good, not because I'm religious, not because I am a prayer-warrior. The truth is, I am wicked, I am unworthy to come before God - so how is it I can call God, father? It is only through Jesus. Who came and brought me home through his forgiveness. Where is our home? - where God is, in heaven.

So even, in our weakness, in all our sinfulness we can come to the throne room of heaven, where we can talk to our loving heavenly father, who rules this world and this week to come...
