Eudunda’s Citizen of the Year is Anne Wilson

Anne Wilson - Eudunda Citizen of the Year 2021 - Eudunda Main Street
Anne Wilson – Eudunda Citizen of the Year 2021 – Eudunda Main Street

Annie – A happy, proud and giving Eudunda Citizen

If you live in Eudunda you are most likely to have met Anne Wilson (Annie as she prefers to be known) at some time since she moved to Eudunda. That was some 12 years ago, and Annie has been active in the Eudunda community ever since, volunteering for many and varied organizations during her time here. These include The Eudunda Hall and Catering Committee, Meals on Wheels, Eudunda Family Heritage Gallery, Eudunda Red Cross and is also currently Treasurer of the Eudunda Community, Business and Tourism Committee (ECBAT).

Annie actually has an association with Eudunda going back to her grandparents who lived here and worked on the railways and she feels comfortable here in Eudunda.

Katie Preston nominated Annie after getting to know her and working along side her, especially in the Eudunda Ambulance Station where Annie has been a volunteer admin support office for almost seven years. Katie wrote that she nominated her for her “passion and commitment” to her work in the community, as well as her cheerful attitude and ‘can do’ approach.

Annie said,
“I feel pretty humbled being nominated, it’s wonderful, but there are ladies in the area who have been volunteering for over 50 years”.

“Being involved in all these organisations as a volunteer has been important to me, as I love working with people and keeping active, both physically and mentally. I have come to recognise that so much of our community relies on volunteerism and in fact is the lifeblood of small regional communities.

“I am excited to be involved volunteering with others in a new project for the community, of the Eudunda Community Op Shop which is a sub-committee of ECBAT. We plan on giving the shop a makeover with a new image and upgrading. The exciting thing here with ECBAT taking on the project is that not only will the community have access to good quality low priced items but the money raised will go straight back into the town.

“We would like to encourage some younger volunteers to come help too. It doesn’t have to take up your whole life, just as much or as little as you want. It will be a great experience for you and be really appreciated too.”

PS. For those wondering – we chose the photo shoot after most of the shops had shut so that Annie and photographer/editor would not get run over.

Congratulations to the Eudunda Christmas Street Party Committee of Alison Schutz, Kristy Karpinsky, Della James, Julia Schutz, Michelle Hoffman and Lisa Menzel for thier fabulous work, raising fund and running a fantastic Christmas Street Party in 2019 and to the many people who were involved in this event. Many said it was the best yet, and as the year before was also great, that is indeed positive validation!

They are indeed a fine example of how a small group can achieve so much, and bring so much joy to the community as a whole.

The party was amazing to experience, with lots of market stalls lining one side of the main street into the Light Hotel Carpark and around the corner into Lloyd Street. An exceptional number of well decorated floats and participants, formed the parade leading Father Christmas down Bruce Street and when he arrived it is amazing to see how many enthusiastic young children enjoy coming to seeing Santa along with thier families.

The sight of all the children having fun and sharing with each other and parents and Grandparents in one place really does bring home the thought on how lucky we are as a Safe and Happy Community, a positive and broad validation that we are a thriving community. The night was finished off with community Carol Singing to really bring in the Christmas Spirit.

The joy these ladies bought to our broad community with this event helped to relieve the stress the whole community was facing with successive years of drought was priceless.

The Eudunda Christmas Street Party Committee was preparing to run the event again in 2020, only to be thwarted by the COVID-19 Pandemic. Despite that, the committee worked hard to run a few smaller modified components so that the local children could have some sense of the fun of Christmas. Well Done Ladies.

The Eudunda Christmas Street Party Committee is a Sub Committee of the Eudunda Community, Business and Tourism Committee (ECBAT). The event was sponsored by the Regional Council of Goyder, ECBAT, and AGL, Jakelco Contracting and many other Local Businesses.

If you would like to be part of this year’s Committee or just able to help out a bit, please contact them on Facebook @EudundaXmas. Some of the Committee are retiring this year and your help would be fantastic.

Many Eudunda residents will remember Peter McLachlan when he lived in Eudunda, and although he has moved to the ‘Tourist Area’ of Goolwa, Peter still has great family ties and a love for our district .

Signal Point Gallery, Goolwa showcases the art of Port Elliot Artist Peter McLachlan.
Titled “Casting Shadows” the exhibition includes paintings that emphasise a strong sense of place and belonging.

Peter explained,
“Recent works are a result of the Pandemic, with a return to the basics, time spent looking closely and close-up. As so much of the Artwork has a foundation based in the landscape, shadows naturally come into play, resulting in the title of the exhibition.

Rich in colour and tone these works highlight the beauty and uniqueness of debris and material, the earth we walk upon.

The exhibition runs from 29th January – 14th March 2021
Open Mon – Sunday 10am – 4pm
Launch Sunday 7th February 2pm – 4pm

Peter would love to see people from the Mid North drop in if they happen to be in the area, or have made a special trip down that way.

“One such work titled “My Back Yard” captures nothing more than the elements that I walk upon each day. The end result is a resurrection of matter, transformed, imbued with spirit and wonderment.” Peter added.

You can also find that the exhibition is included in the Fringe Festival booklet.

Ehrlichiosis disease in dogs

PIRSA has published some great info on this threat to dogs. Including how to report the disease, information about travelling with your dog, moving dogs to South Australia from interstate, about ehrlichiosis, symptoms of ehrlichiosis in dogs, advice for dog owners, preventing ehrlichiosis and even Information for vets and a Facts Sheet.

Here are the main introductory points:
Ehrlichiosis is a tick-borne disease of dogs that causes fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, abnormal bleeding, pain and weight loss. If not treated properly it can result in death.

Ticks carrying the disease have been detected in South Australia for the first time. In January 2021, laboratory testing of ticks collected from dogs in the far north regions confirmed the presence of the ehrlichiosis-causing bacteria Ehrlichia canis (E. canis). The disease was detected for the first time in Australia in Western Australia and the Northern Territory in mid-2020.

Dogs infected with the disease cannot transmit the disease to other dogs – the only way transmission can occur is through infected ticks and infected dogs do not transmit ehrlichiosis to people, however in rare cases, infected ticks may infect people. Information about ticks and human health precautions is available from the WA Health website (linked on the website below).

Grain Producers SA – Market Ready Banner

Grain Producers SA (GPSA) was proud to launch the Market Ready campaign last November which supports South Australian growers to ensure they maintain high standards of grain hygiene. They are now please to be able to run a series of trade and market access workshops across SA in February 2021,

South Australia has an excellent reputation for providing premium agricultural products and working closely with trading partners to ensure their needs are met. By continuing to uphold high grain hygiene standards, South Australian grain growers will have access to a large range of markets across the world for their grain.

There are many aspects to consider including Spraying, Withholding Periods, Snail Management, Rodent Management, Grain Storage and Good Hygiene.

All participants in the grain industry have a role to play in keeping our grain clean, ensuring it meets market requirements and is within physical, chemical and biological tolerance limits.

Workshops

GPSA will run a series of trade and market access workshops across SA in February 2021, which will aim to educate growers in their obligations and role in the value chain under the Industry Management Plans.

By attending, you will receive free resources which will guide your on-farm grain hygiene practices. As an added bonus, you can learn more about grain marketing and getting greater value from your crop in the Beyond the Silo grain marketing workshop being held in conjunction with the Market Ready workshop.

Register for one of the workshops in February: The closest to Eudunda is Balaklava on 18th Feb

The Census of Population and Housing (Census) is Australia’s largest statistical collection undertaken by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and one of the most important.

The Census has provided a snapshot of Australia, showing how our nation has changed over time, and helping us to plan for the future, including planning schools, healthcare and roads to local services for individuals, families and communities. Data collected in the Census helps governments, businesses and not for profit organisations across the country make informed decisions.

In 2016, the Census counted close to 10 million dwellings and approximately 24 million people. The next national Census will be held in August 2021.

You could be part of the team collecting this important information.

Adecco is advertising for Field Managers and Field Officers (Contract/Temp).

Eudunda Bowls News

By Peter on Feb 03, 2021 02:37 am
Eudunda Bowls News Banner

The Night Bowlers welcomed many visitors who filled the teams and the eight left over enjoyed some good bowling practise. These electrical contractors ‘generated’ income for the bar, and provided a noisy and fun atmosphere. The meal voucher was won by Bev Regnier and wine Ruth Scoot. This week is the popular Over 60’s/Under 60’s competition and players are asked to assemble at least by 7pm for 7.30pm start.

The Ladies played Kapunda at Kapunda and went down 49-79. Ruth Scoot kept pace with Sondra Franks until the last end, finishing 15-19. Joy Hams matched Donna Woods until some unlucky ends turned the tables 19-32, and Judy Milde was unable to work through Judy Earl’s teams’ good bowling 15-28.

Thursday afternoon ‘s Division 1 had a bye.
Thursday afternoon’s Division 2 played Kapunda under the roof with a result 35-77. Ron Hams, Tony Scoot and Colin Menz were down to Trevor Leslie, John Dermody Mick Ryan.

Division 1 played a confident and egotistic Angaston at Angaston and after the heat rules’ 15 ends, finished 37-86. Chris Jones skippered against Matt Short, Tony Northcott, Mark Schutz and Jimmy Brydson in a tactical ‘blue’, Frank Pfitzner would have rather enjoyed a mornay with Jaunay, Bill Mader won more ends than Liam Buckley, and Tait Rogers was the shining light with a win 16-15 against Jono Voigt. Tait’s team of Mally Schutz, Doreen Twartz and Jake Pfitzner bowled very well all day.

Division 2A had a bye.

Division 3 played Tanunda on our home turf and played 21 ends instead of the regulatory 13 ends, as per the heat rule. After 13 ends the result was 31-50. Pat Obst was 8-20 to Judy Thompson, Marg Nietschke finished 9-19 against Gary Rainsford, and star of the day was Roy Fiegert being up 3 shots 14-11 against Glenis Kupke.

Team of the Week was Roy Fiegert, Jeff Willoughby, Colin Menz and Joy Fiegert.

G G Schutz - 90th birthday at the Eudunda Bowls
G G Schutz – 90th birthday at the Eudunda Bowls

The Night Bowlers experienced an extra noisy night of frivolity. New recruits were a welcome addition to some depleted teams and felt at home immediately, and enjoyed the barefoot bowls so much, they will continue to come each week. They are employees of an electrical company contracted for the Robertstown substation upgrade for the future NSW connector and the solar farm. The Meal Voucher was won by Nick Leditschke, and the bottle of wine Ted Schiller.’ Happy Birthday’ was sung to GG Schutz ahead of his 90th birthday on Saturday.

The Ladies hosted Nuriootpa and won 59-54. Joy Hams had her third draw in a row, in a cliff-hanger with Pauline Eichner, Judy Milde had a great recovery from 4-19 to finish 17-22 against Carmen Isbel. Pat Obst skippered the team that got Eudunda over the line with a fantastic 23-13 win over Denise Baker.

Thursday afternoon Division 1 played Lyndoch at Lyndoch and went down 63-70. Bill Mader and his team displayed excellent bowling winning 24-19 over Bob Howell, Murray Sauer pulled off a cliff-hanger 22-21 against Harry Sykes, however these were not enough to carry Geoff Schmidt in his battle with Wayne Williams.

Thursday afternoon Division 2 hosted Tanunda Black and were out-bowled 32-95. Ron Hams, Mike Rees and Jeff Willoughby were down to Jeff Garrett, Dave Pech and Peter Hart.

Division 1 played Nuriootpa on our home turf and went down 73-100. Bill Mader had a draw against Jim Barr, being Eudunda’s shining light. Frankie Pfitzner conceded two shots to John Carter at the end of the day, Chris Jones was down to Brenton Brown 14-23, and Tait Rogers struck tough opposition in Steve Heintze.

Division 2A lost to Kapunda at Kapunda 61-84. Ron Hams made a brilliant recovery from 0-20 after 9 ends, to finish 23-30 against Jack Trotta, Gordon ‘Kiwi’ Te.Au’s team displayed captivating bowling even though they had a 18-28 result against Bob Booth, and Ruth Scoot stepped into Tony’s shoes skippering well against John Dermody.

Division 3 had a great win 62-49 at Kapunda with all teams up. Jeff Willoughby was up 23-18 to Shane Collings, Marg Nietschke 21-16 to Peter Maitland, and Pat Obst continued her winning streak 18-15 against Tony Robinson.

Team of the Week was the Women’s Pennant team comprising Pat Obst, Liz Mosey, Marg Nietschke and Carolyn Doering.
The Club Draw was won by Colin Menz, who was not present so the draw jackpots for next week.

After the game on Saturday, GG blew out the ’90’ candles on his birthday ‘Deutscher Kuchen’ cake and all sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to celebrate his birthday on the day.
