Workshops Ministry of Foreign Affairs

We have launched a year-long challenge at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs! During several workshops and interactive sessions with ~20 - 50 civil servants will use tools to make better decisions (e.g. Multi Level Decision Analysis) and use their collective experience to improve decision making. For more information, watch this 1 minute animation.

For those who are interested in Institutional Decision Making, here are some great resources:
EAN is expanding!
It is an exciting time for EAN: multiple people have joined since the last newsletter and we are working hard to make EAN a sustainable, effective, and professional organisation.
  • Siebe Rozendal (right picture) joined the management team as Interim Community Director and his first priority is to secure his own funding. His EA knowledge and passion for community building has already proven to be very valuable.
  • We are increasing our efforts to secure funding for the management team. If successful, we can spend all our time on incubating projects and the professionalisation of EAN!
  • Of course, any contributions are more than welcome! You can find more info here and you can always reach out to us.
  • Welcome Maritt (operations assistance), Ruben (data & analysis), Jasper (fundraising) and Lotte (graduation project) to our team!

Introduction to Longtermism

(Re)watch our event here.
Longtermism is an important concept in the EA community. During this event Matthijs Maas gave an overview of this area. (Go directly to specific talks via links in the notes.) Interested in Longtermism? Contact us to be updated on future activities.
'Beter goed doen' (Doing good better) workshops results
We finished this minicourse with a very diverse group of 30 enthusiastic participants. Throughout four interactive sessions, we established individual values, explored in which area participants would like to do good (donating, career, lifestyle or leisure), shared experiences and discussed ways to implement our intentions. This lead to a broad variety of positive outcomes, such as more than 10k in annual pledges for effective charities; taking up volunteer work; changes in one’s career path; and shifting to a vegetarian or vegan diet!
For those who joined: Thank you for your participation!

Want to participate next time? Contact us or check our activities regularly.

EAN is looking for one or two volunteers for approximately one to four hours a week to join our event team! (Read more here.) If you are interested in applying, please email us a short motivation and your LinkedIn profile to info@effectiefaltruisme.nl.

Toby Ord contributes to UN Human Development
The UN’s latest Human Development Report features a 7-page piece by Toby Ord on existential risk and the protection of humanity’s longterm potential. Toby said of the piece:

I’ve long admired the HDR, and referred to it often when I worked on global poverty. So it’s great to be able to give something back, and to start up a conversation connecting existential risk with human development writ large.

It is also great to engage with the UN on existential risk. There is already a lot of engagement on individual risks (nuclear, bio…) but less so far on existential risk as a whole — e.g. on the importance of achieving lasting security from all such risks.
