February, 2021

A very special year lies behind us. As always, we would like to inform you about the latest news from medtool. The new medtool version 4.5 is ready for download. We have summarised the most important innovations in this newsletter.

medtool 4.5 Release

Customers with a valid annual licence can download the new version free of charge from our medtool website.
If you do not have a valid medtool licence but would like to test medtool 4.5, please send us an email.

Important Version Changes

As already announced last year, medtool 4.5 is available for:

  • Windows 10
  • Ubuntu 18.04 & 20.04, Scientific Linux 7.7

The switch to Python 3 is postponed by one year. If you use plugins, we recommend making your code Python 2 and 3 compatible this year.

Graphical User Interface

At the request of our customers, there is a "Dark Theme". Simply switch between dark and classic mode as described here.

Medtool Bridge to 3D Slicer

Since medtool 4.5, a script is available to call up 3D Slicer and start a reduced GUI. After manual image interaction, the user can return to medtool without interrupting a medtool run! Currently implemented are a view, crop, and segmentation option.

Note: This Add-on  is not included in the standard medtool licence and requires an additional licence. Please contact us for more details.

Image Processing News

New options in the Image Processor script are:
  • '-repl' option which labels an images with a 3D mesh is extended by hexa20, tetra10, penta16 elements.
  • '-in' option: Allows to read compressed MHD files (zraw).
  • NEW: '-zipf' option: Allows to write compressed MHD files (zraw). This saves a lot of space in case of black&white files.
  • NEW: '-distt' option: Computes the distance transform based on the Saito Method (see figure).

Some users ask for special image editing filters which are currently not in medtool's image processor. Note that the

Meshing News

New options in the Mesh Converter script are:
  • '-in' option: Automatic dedection of binary STLs
  • '-latt' option which extract the lattice structure of the given 1D, 2D, or 3D mesh. The 'thickness' is given via the input (see figure)

Examples

A new example for the demonstration of the medtool - 3D Slicer bridge has been added which shows the pre-segmention with medtool and the interactive segmention of this images with 3D Slicer. Further more it demonstrates how to cut a ROI with 3D Slicer and how the 3D Slicer output can used with medtool
