Religious Exploration Moment

Hello AUUF families! As many experienced parents will attest, sometimes when faced with a menu of 37 available flavors at the ice cream shop, the most helpful prompt is, “They have Vanilla, Chocolate, or Strawberry…which of those sounds good?” Giving kids a choice can be empowering, but too many choices can be overwhelming. The opposite of this (and a lesson that has proven to be especially useful this past year where so many plans have been cancelled) is to help kids consider a “Plan B.” Developing a Plan B is coming up with an option that might feel almost as good as Plan A, if something (like a pandemic) gets in the way. “We are planning to go to XYZ on vacation this summer. If we can’t do that, what other things might we do as a family instead that could be just as fun? Or “We’re hoping to have an in-person birthday party this year. But if that CAN’T happen…how else might we celebrate you that would feel nearly as good?”
Life sometimes gets in the way of our best laid plans. Teaching kids to get in the habit of considering a Plan B can help to avoid the heartbreak that comes when things don’t go exactly as you originally hoped. The good news is that coming up with an enticing Plan B is a great place to let your kid’s creativity shine. You might just find an even better Plan A emerges from one of the 37 flavors of alternate plans your kids might imagine.

Upcoming Services

An Abundance of Connections
February 7, 2021

This year has really highlighted our need for community. In our stewardship kickoff service, we’ll examine how AUUF has been a lifeline for so many people this year and how we promote connections in our fellowship and the larger community.

Where Do We Come From? Evolution and the Story of Life
February 14, 2021

Since the dawn of humanity, people have always wondered, “Where do we come from?” When Charles Darwin promoted his theory of evolution, some believed it to be a nihlistic and unsatisfactory response. In this service, Rev. Chris will examine how Darwin’s theory of evolution, properly understood, can lead to a sense of awe about the workings of the universe.
