Spring 2021 School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning Colloquium Series

We are excited to continue our spring semester colloquium series as we welcome Dr. Enrique Vivoni, Associate Dean of the Graduate College at Arizona State University, and professor in the School of Earth and Space Exploration and the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment. Dr. Vivoni will be sharing his talk "Evidence of the Urban Oasis Effect and its Implications on the Carbon Budget."

The oasis effect refers to the impact of advected energy on the surface energy balance leading to enhanced evapotranspiration. In this study, he presents a 1‐yr record of water, energy, and carbon dioxide (CO2) fluxes to study the occurrence and signature of the oasis effect in an irrigated turf grass in Phoenix, Arizona. Days with the oasis effect are selected using readily available air temperature and relative humidity and include 26 excessive heat warnings in the summer of 2019. During oasis days, higher evaporative cooling is demonstrated throughout the day, especially during late afternoons when it can exceed net radiation. Evaporative enhancements are linked to abiotic mechanisms, such as soil and irrigation water evaporation, since plant productivity is unaltered. Nighttime evaporative losses and CO2 releases are also enhanced during oasis days. Their findings show how the oasis effect impacts the water, carbon, and thermal conditions of urban parks.

Film Screening of Current Revolution: Nation in Transition, Feb. 4

You're invited to: American Resilience Project Film Screening:  Current Revolution: Nation in Transition

"We are a nation in transition.” The shift from fossil fuels to clean energy is rapidly transforming the energy industry with profound impacts on workers and communities. How can we ameliorate the disruptions and facilitate a just and sustainable transition?

Join American Resilience Project and Arizona State University for the premiere of Current Revolution: Nation in Transition (30 min), a documentary about the closure of the Navajo Generating Station—the West’s largest coal-fired powerplant—and the Navajo Nation’s efforts to deal with its impacts and embrace renewable energy. The film examines how we, as a nation, can transition from fossil fuels to clean energy in a way that builds resilience and new opportunities for the communities and workers affected by the energy transition.
