Timely


  • Tuesday, Feb. 2 (5 pm EST deadline) is the last day to add a course without a fee. 
Looking Ahead: Department and University Updates
 

  • The Campus Activity Status is now at a modified Level 2. Classes of 19 students or less may now meet in person, and students may also reserve study space seating at libraries. Find the full range of permissible activities at the healthy.brown website.
  • Administrative staff in HIAA will be in the List 223 office Mondays-Thursdays from 10 am-2 pm until further notice. Please stop by during those times or email us to make an appointment at HIAA@brown.edu.

Happenings


  • Feb. 2 @ noon: Courtney J. Martin, director of the Yale Center for British Art, will give a virtual lunch talk on the complex exhibition history of, and current Yale digital humanities project about the painting Elihu Yale; William Cavendish, the second Duke of Devonshire; Lord James Cavendish; Mr. Tunstal; and an Enslaved Servant. This event is co-sponsored by HIAA and the John Nicholas Brown Center for Public Humanities. The JNBC will present virtual lunch talks 2-3 times per month in the spring.
  • Feb. 3 @ 5 pm: Dominican artist Firelei Báez, who explores possibilities for the future by looking into diasporic pasts, will give a virtual talk in conversation with Professor Leticia Alvarado. Registration is required to attend.
  • Feb. 4 @ 2 pm: Join BAI Professor of the Practice Erin McKeown in her home studio as she works on new music, plays, or poems. Feel free to observe, or to work on your own pieces simultaneously. Learn more about the BAI “Watch Me Work” series, and register.
  • Feb. 6-7: Brown MFA playwrights will host writing is live, a weekend of audio plays, and panels. 
  • Feb. 10-13: Professors Lindsay Caplan and Gretel Rodriguez, as well as graduate student, Fosca Maddaloni, will present at the College Art Association’s annual conference, which will be held virtually this year. There is a fee to attend the conference. Please go to the HIAA website for more details. 
  • Feb. 12 @ noon: The Museum of Fine Arts (Boston, MA), will host a panel discussion on museum careers featuring Marina Tyquiengco, who taught in the HIAA department this past fall. 
  • Ongoing: Check out the University Library’s Image Blog, which presents a new post and online exhibition of art and architecture that showcases YELLOW, one of Pantone's designated colors for 2021.

  • Stressing about taxes? On Feb. 4 at 5 pm, the Graduate School will be hosting a webinar on preparing tax returns. Learn how to calculate your income from salaries, stipends, fellowships, grants, and scholarships, while using education benefits to minimize your tax liability. 
  • Submit by Feb. 28 to InVisible Culture: An Electronic Journal for Visual Culture. Housed at the University of Rochester, this journal is currently seeking articles, creative pieces, and reviews on art and activism, queer social life, institutional critique, and more. Submission guidelines and full list of themes are available at their website
  • Submit by Mar. 5 to the Harvard-Yale-Brown Conference in Book History, which will be held virtually on May 5 and invites papers on any aspect of the History of the Book. See attachment for complete submission guidelines. Submit abstracts to Kelly Minot McCay (kmrafey@g.harvard.edu) and Carly Yingst (ceyingst@g.harvard.edu). 
  • HIAA faculty and grad students: By popular demand, Sunday social hours are back! Jewelry, hats, pets, etc. are highly encouraged.

Feb. 11 – DUG Event!!

Join the HIAA DUGs and faculty at noon on Feb. 11 to discuss two selections from the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago's online exhibition. Participants are asked to view these works prior to our virtual discussion. For more info, contact HIAADUG@brown.edu. Everyone is welcome!
